Topic Dog Boards / Health / Puppy heart murmur

Breeder has just told me that the pup i am about to pick up went to the vet at 7 weeks and he detected a heart murmur.however at 8 weeks he could not hear it. Does anyone know whether i should go ahead and get the pup hoping the problem has corrected itself or should i not bother and wait for another litter.
Its honest of the breeder to give this info , i think, but i am worried that i will get attached to the pup and then something awful may happen to her and i will be upset and worried for the pup. Also should i pay full price for her(this sounds really mercenary but it worries me that i may have to pay lots of vet bills in the future- which i would do if needed but it seems a bit off for me to pay full price when others pay the same for a totally healthy pup from the same litter).
can anyone give me some advice please?

I would not worry as i have had pups with a puppy murmur and it's there at first jab but has gone by 12 weeks old i have had a few with this, ones i have got from other breeders as well, if it's very faint dont worry.

Hi

Why don't you get the puppy and have it checked again, you usually get 72 hours from most breeders. It does seem a bit quick to have disappeared, unless the vet couldn't hear it well enough in the first place. I have a puppy that is a year old who had a heart murmer at 8 weeks but not at twelve. But I also had a puppy that died at 16 weeks with a bad heart so you do have to be careful. I would not charge full price for a puppy with a heart murmer even a very slight one. :)

We had a Tibetan Mastiff that we were told had a heart murmer as a puppy,as she grew she had her checks, sometimes it could be heard an other time non was detected, she lived untill she was 12 years old and passed away peacefully in her sleep.

Alot of pups can have seemingly innocent puppy flow murmurs.
Which vets detect at say 8weeks but normally by the time the pup is 16 weeks old these
have disappeared. Even if they persist there may be no cause for alarm if they are 'quiet'.
Such genuine flow murmurs are not associated with heart disease in the adult.

In my breed Boxers we have a handout sheet on Boxer heart murmurs which should be given
to all (especially new) puppy owners.
All reputable breeders should give this sheet out to their pups new owners.
It is helpful especially in situations like this when the vet can 'frighten the living daylights' out
of the puppy owner without actually explaining to them that puppy flow murmurs can disappear
by the time they are 16 weeks old and then never ever have another murmur in its life.

You could always seek along with the breeders permission a second opinion with another vet to
examine the pup and see what they think i.e. if it is a quiet murmur etc.

If you would like to see the puppy handout sheet go to the following website where you should
be able to view it

Thanks everyone for your help.We picked puppy up on sat and took her to the vets Mon.She cannot detect a murmur now and she seems to be in fine health.I suppose i just got a bit worried.Howeveri'll keep my eye on her and keep fingers crossed. She's a little bundle of furry fun - i forgot how exhausting pups are - buts it's great!

I think more and more innocent murmers are being picked up by vets due to vacdination programs starting end ending sooner. the is what my vet told me.
