does anyone have rough guide as to what sort of prices you should expect to pay for a newfoundland? Also what they are like with children.

i have a yorkie of my own and at the moment i am hand rearing two neapolitan mastiffs which belong to kane who posts here :) they are 17 days old today and are thriving at last.....i've been looking for a newfie for nearly a year now, such beautiful dogs...the time never seems to be right but 1 day i will have 1 or 2 maybe 3 who knows :D
I know a very reputable breeder who has great tempered dogs and great in the ring. She paid £1200 for an outside stud dog so expect a good puppy to be around that.
Hi
Thanks for the info on Newfoundlands

If you get one I'll be very jealous and have to come and visit. My boyf wouldnt even consider one. I showed him the picture and he said thats not a dog its a bear!!! :D
I love them!!! Great big teddy bears
Hi Rachael
How weird is that? It wasn't until recently that I had actually seen one. There is a lady who walks two in the woods where we take Jazz one is 10 and he is enormous (Jazz can walk under his belly!!!) and she also has a 6 month puppy who is totally hilarious. He can't walk and wag his tail at the same time otherwise he falls over and his fur is amazing. Their names are really cool too Harley and Hendrix both are appropriate I think.
Like yourself though my fella thinks they are great but wont let me have one (boo hoo)

HI
My girl was £950 and is from a really good breeder (her uncle is the top newf in the country) she is 6 months old and I have a 4 year old and a 1 year old girls (kids), she is absolutely fantastic with the kids. She did have a tendency to knock the little one over when she was a smaller puppy - she used to lick her or sniff her and knock her over but as she is getting bigger (she is now a lot bigger than a labrador) she seems to be getting more gentle. Do get a book and learn about the health problems though because even though my breeders do all the health checks to try to ensure healthy dogs my girl unfortunately has just been diagnosed with elbow displaysia and it is a common complaint with the breed. I will say that I got a newfie for the way they are with people and children and it has been the best decision I have made even with the health problems and I now think that I have found my breed and will always have one. Good luck with your search.
Nikki
Hi
Thanks for the info your girl sounds adorable, what is she called? have you had other breeds before if so which ones?
Michelle:)
I didn't know what a Newfoundland was just looked them up their beautiful dogs but I can't even begin to think of the logistics of owning such a big dog.
Steve
Hi
The lady who walks her two monsters also has a choc lab so she has definitely got her hands full but the nuttiest of the three is as expected the choc lab. What dog/s do you have
Michelle:)
You need a car that can fit a newfie in, ours will fit one newfie in (so need to convince hubby we need a bigger car). But apart from that we have a normal house and garden and she fits in fine, what dogs do you have?
Nikki
Hi
I have had a field trained english springer spaniel when I was 15 we only had her 2 years when she died, she was the most obedient dog I have ever had or seen. She was 5 when we got her and she had been a gamekeepers working dog and she became the most wonderful pet. I was a dobie owner for 13 years and she was demanding, noisy, cuddly, wimpy everything a dobie is. We now have a 12 year old mongrel and the monster that is the 6 month old newfie Izzy. Keep me posted on your search for one.
Nikki
I've got a wee little Whippet who's curled up on my lap now keeping my legs warm, I've got to ask do they have mad half hours like whippets do because I'm laughing just thinking about it.
Cheers
Steve
Jazz has mad 24 hrs even when hes asleep hes mad he lines his four teddies up around him with his favourite on his chest!!!

I have 2 newfoundlands 1 black and 1 landseer, my big lad P.J. was 12 stone the last time we got him on the weighbridge, I have a 5 yearold grandaughter that has been brought up with them from birth,as Savannah has alway's lived with me Megan my bitch is her best friend and if she is upset or in trouble you will see her sat with her arms round megan telling her,her trouble's or crying on her shoulder, she is calm, and love's her waterwork, P.J. is 2 years older than megan but he is a bubbly robust, boy that has never grown up, he is over friendly and everyone has to love him first.I got P.J. 5 years ago and he cost £850, megan is nearly 4 and she was £800 but they both have temprements that are bomb proof and I do not begrudge a penny of it, If you are thinking of buying join, the newfoundland club, that is a good place to start they will tell you or fun days and trials, were you can go and meet owner's, they will advise on health checks, hip scoreing, heart tests, they are a beautifull breed but not for the house proud. We had to buy a van for the dogs which made them even more expensive him indoors say's that counts as if we had not bought them we could have a proper car
Hi:)
Thanks for the info on Newfoundlands. How jelous am I!! 2 of the adorable giants and from the sound of your 2 well they sound a joy. I hadn't seen them until a recent visit to the woods with our 3 yr lab , well it was love at first sight. All I have to do is try and convince my partner into letting me have one. As for being houseproud thats not a problem as Jazz is a messy devil anyway !!. Thanks again

All I can say is life changes once you have a newf...or two!!! I have 2 one black bitch called Molly who is 7 1/2 years old, and a brown bitch called Bronte who is 6. Before having these two I had always lived with GSD's, so I was used to telling my dog to do something and it would do it! Don't expect that with a newf...especially a young one, they can be extremely stuborn!! They don't take up much room in a house, they are great with kids and other animals, they don't need that much exercise or food (mine eat the same as my GSD), but..... they do need a lot of brushing, trimming and bathing!! And when they go out in the mud they bring a heck of a lot more back in with them than a "normal" sized dog! Oh yes, and when you go out with them you can never be in a rush, as EVERYONE will want to talk to you :)
I had both my girls from a small breeder in Poole, they are great and have never *touch wood* had any serious health problems. They are great to have around...once you get used to the dirt, slobber and the plodding about!!!
