Ok I'm new to all this! never had a dog from puppy before and although i've read up on my breed (staff) and read info on rearing, training and feeding bit unsure how to get her out of the habit of relieving her bowels on my rug in the frontroom. Just brought her home saturday and i accept it's new home, new surroundings and no doggy family. Although she's settled in really well she does like to poo on the rug and wee on the bathroom floor. When we were at the "pets at home" store i noticed a product for helping to train pups and wondered if anybody had used them or had opinions on them. They were...how did my husband put it....."nappies for the floor" for pups to use, they claimed to attract pups to them and claimed that you didn't need to use newspaper. Any thoughts, ideas or tips would greatly appreciated.
with thanx

I have heard they are quite good.
Personally i percevere with crate training and a toilet trip every 15-20 mins but thats just me! I'm lucky, Akitas are a very clean and clever breed (when they feel like it) and they take next to no toilet training. Obviously we have our little accidents but its par for the course!
I would try them, if you don't think they are working try another method. Remembering that dogs have little control of their bladders until over 12 weeks gives you a little time to try the pads out for their 'attractiveness'
Good luck!

Don't part with your hard earned cash, stick with the newspaper, praise highly and keep moving paper towards door.we had 4 pups through the summer and were house trained by 4-5 weeks, breeder should have started this process, but I guess they are not all like us,sandra

All my pups leave using paper and are accustomed to doing poos outside, i then suggest they are crate trained so as to speed up the process of toilet training in their new homes. The crate is always lined with paper, much easier to clear up! My pup has been excellent since she was 13 weeks, not once has she pooped indoors and we only get the occasional accident if i sleep in in the morning! At four months she is brill! Her sisters have been just as good.
Crate training is the way forward when it comes to toilet training!

Hi,

I tried the puppy pads and they worked well for my westie. A bit expensive, but well worth a try.

Good luck!

I bought them and sometimes they worked...sometimes they didn't. They're ok for during the night or when you're at work but the best thing is to take puppy out every 15-20mins when you're home and he'll soon get to know where he has to do the toilet.

we used puppy pads and still do at night - thing is people say if you're trying to train them to go outside they can confuse the dog as you're telling them its ok to go on the pad to, but we found that right from getting ruby home at 8 weeks she'd go to the pad if she wanted to pee and so if she went towards it at the back door we upped her and whisked her outside - used it more as a signalling tool. (we always have praised her loads and gave her treats at first when she went outside but just ignored it if she went on the pad and if we caught her in the act gave her a definite 'NO' if on the floors - she got the idea of where she should go v quickly indeed.)

they are pricey but if you're busy they definitely make things easier to clean up, less accidents.

I am totally agianst the training pads and newspaper training. I never advise the people I train for to use either of these. If people choose to use them then that is there choice but I don't advise it. One of the biggest problems I find when training dogs that have been paper trained is getting them to realize, after learning it was ok to go in the house, that it is not ok to go in the house. It is easier to train a dog once then to detrain a dog and then retrain it. I advise my clients to get a crate and then depending on the age of the dog I give them a feeding/crating schedule that helps them to figure out and time when the dog will need to relieve itself. I also get them to teach the dog to relieve on command. Within a week, if they follow the schedule then the dog is house trained, crate trained and can potty on command. One example is when my dog has pups. I start their house/crate training at 4 weeks old. By the time they go to their homes they are trained to go on command, go only in one spot of the yard and they are crate trained. They are 8 weeks when they go to their homes. Please use a crate. instead of the pads or paper.

Thanks to all of you for your advice :)
