my mum took one of my dogs to the vets today for a blood test but she forgot to mention not shaving the leg (or as little as was need) so we know have a dog with a shaved patch on his leg and i was not impressed considering in 3 weeks we have crufts and a one each week leading up to it after we have had him out of the ring since september to mature - how long will it take the hair to grow back so as it isnt quite as noticable as at the moment

My bitch was shaved 3 weeks ago when she had calsium injection
after haveing her pups. Sorry but the area is still like stubble.

my bitch lost a bit of fur when she had a little fight with a nother bitch and it was just before she had her puppies and i wanted her to look good for the new owner of the puppies so i went to the vets and he said to give her evening primrose oil so i did and her fur started growing back within days, and by the time the puppies were 4 weeks old you could not tell.

It usualy takes 8 to 10 weeks to grow back to normal. But if it is a small patch on the front leg I would not worry to much, it might stop your exhibit winning Group at Crufts but it won't stop it winning a class. All judges should know what has happened and not take note of it at all, unless it comes down to two dogs that are difficult to seperate then it may be taken into consideration, but even then most judges would still take no note of the missing hair. Still disapointing isn't it when you want to present your dog at their best. Enjoy yourself at Crufts and I am sure you will get the place you derserve. Jackie H

Off on another tack, why do vets shave to take bloods? In a life & death situation I can understand that the need to save life overtakes all else and you will shave to insert a line or take blood but in a healthy dog I can not understand why it is thought necessary. My vet will not allow his staff to shave and if you ask a vet not to do so they can manage so why do they do it anyway unless not asked not to? Not too lazy surely. Jackie H

My Heelers have Evening primrose in there diet.
But the hair is still slow to grow back. May be it is because my
bitches coatis not in a growing phase after pups.
Aldi is the cheapest place i have found to buy it.
The oil is in capules i put in a garlic press and add to food.
It really is great for there coats.

i think that i was lucky as for the last 2 weeks her ferr is starting to look dred full, the puppies are now 9 weeks and i stoped given it to her about 3 weeks ago and it has now thinned out so i got some more to day and will start to give them in the morning, so with ane lucky she should be looking smart again in about 2 weeks (fingers crossed)

When our Bernese went to have her ear drained (blood clot) the vet asked if we showed her so that he knew if he could shave her or not which I thought was very thoughtful as most vets wouldn't even think of asking.

I entered My pup at manchester and she has two shaved areas on her legs Her Breeder who is a CH show Judge took her in for me didnt seem to think it should make any difference, but probably another person wouldnt have taken her But I wanted her to have the experience of a ch show going on the bench etc.. you should be fine. Good Luck

I've taken a dog in with a shaved stomach/side (the stiches were out!) and the hair was growing back, but he won his class. Shaved areas are pretty obvious and obviously not a confirmation problem so I would not worry

Good Luck

I had to have my puppy's baby eye teeth extracted as they hadn't come out and were pushing the new adult teeth forward, I told the vet not to shave him as he had a show coming up but he still did anyway! I think they took about an inch square off his front leg (How big is the aneasthetic needle anyway?) I was not very happy when I saw it and they actualy knocked my entry fee for the show off his vets bill I kicked up such a huge fuss about!:D I took him anyway and he qualified for Crufts! When I apologised for the bald patch on his leg the judge merely replied "My dear, I hadn't even noticed it, I was too busy looking at his conformation and movement" :p So I think you have nothing to worry about, if you are put down for that then I would be very surprised indeed!!
