I am picking up my beautiful 8 week old bordeaux pup tonight. Can't wait. I feel completely unprepared for his arrival even though I've read nearly every puppy book on the market and got toys, bedding etc., cleared away everything I can think of, tidied up any cables lying about the place and put a stair gate in.
I haven't felt this nervous in years. Is there anywhere on this site that you post pics?

I am afraid you cant post pics on here, but if you make yourself a little web page with pics on you could put a link to it:)

Hi Tim,
good luck with your new puppy, you'll find he'll sleep most of the time, for about the first week, make the most of his puppyhood,as it does'nt last long we kept two pup's from our last litter, who are now 5 month's now weighing in at 29kgs (dog) and 25kgs(bitch),they grow so quick!as soon as he's had all his injection's,get him out as much as possible,as bordeaux's can be quite timid as pup's,introduced him to everything you can think off, buses ,cars, kid's, other dog's ,and you should have a happy well adjusted family pet, there a wonderful loving breed ,and i hope you get as much pleasure and fun from him as we do our bordeaux's

Keisha,
The plan is to get him out as much as possible even if I have to carry him before he has had his injections. If he turns out anything like his parents he will be a little cracker (though not little for very long!)

Puppy is at home.I'm a little frustrated at the moment. He doesn't mind being in the front room on his own but he hates being in the kitchen on his own and just whines for England.I had hoped to put his bed in the kitchen in a crate as we have a tiled floor which is easier to clear up any accidents. As soon as the crate door is shut he makes a right racket, but he's fine eating and drinking in it.
On the subject of accidents,he started to pee and poo outside when we took him out but now he just waits until we come in and then he goes. Any ideads how to remedy the situation. I know he's only a baby but frustrating nine the less. Puppies, who'd have 'em!

Hiya, I had the same problem with Diesel on the first night, he just would not sleep in the crate, but that's understandable, as everything they are experiencing from then on in, is so different to what they've been used to with their mum and littermates. I would persevere with the crate, Diesel absolutely loves his, we've had him home for over a week now and he disappears off now to sleep in it during the day, and we don't have a problem closing the door although we only close it at night or if I'm going out. The first night was awful, I couldn't stand to hear him so upset, and I ended up sleeping on the floor with him  but the next day I had him in and out the crate with treats, although I didn't feed or water him in it, we played with a few of his favourite toys, he fetched them in and out of it, and now he honestly loves it :)
As for the weeing and pooing, is he doing this after he's been left alone for a while? How is he when you are there? Generally, I take Diesel out after he's wakened, played, eaten and probably every half hour or so, and if you suddenly see them walking around in circles, they generally need to go out. I hope this helps a little, I understand how stressed you must be feeling, but I'm sure if you persevere, he'll get more used to the crate and he'll soon pick up the idea that he has to go to the toilet outside :)

I've abandoned the crate/playpen thing. I've sectioned off half of the front room last night and he only woke twice. I put one of those puppy pads down and he managed to get nearly everthing on it. Maybe the noise of the fridge was keeping him awake.May move him into the kitchen when he's settled in abit more.He only woke us up after he had done it though.Probably wanted to make us proud that he had hit the target so to speak. He's managing to go outside again now, when he has toileted I have been giving him a treat. We are having some windows fitted at the moment and the noise doesn't seem to bother him a bit, in fact he's fast asleep at the moment.

Hi

Its a shame you abandoned the crate because in the end they do get used to it and like it, but I nearly got rid of mine too so I know how you feel. Ive had Becks, (westie) for 5 weeks now and he sleeps all night, he was upstairs in my room in his crate but last for a week and a half now he has been in the living room in his crate and has been absolutely fine. As for the toilet training, Becks sometimes does exactly the same; is outside for ages and then comes back in does it in the house but he is getting so much better and the accidents are now few and far between.

Good luck!

Hiya, I have to agree with Becksmum, he would have gotten used to his crate eventually :) but I do understand how you felt - maybe if Diesel hadn't got used to his so quickly, I wouldn't have persevered either  so as long as having him in a sectioned off part of the room works for you both, I'm sure that's fine. I'd continue treating him everytime he goes to the loo outside and make a big fuss of him, puppies love to be the centre of attention, mines does anyway! :D I'm glad he seems a little more settled anyway - good luck :)

Well, Barney has been home for a week now and he's not a bad lad really. He's starting to get used to going to the toilet outside a bit more now and I can pretty much spot the signs before he has an accident inside. There must be the scent of a previous accident on the carpet because he usually circles the dining room table a couple of times before attempting to squat. I have tried the crate/playpen thing again and last night he slept for about 5 hours before barking to be let out for a relief break. When you are trying to get the pup used to the crate during the day should you shut the door behind them once they are in or leave it open?
How can I get rid of the scent from the carpet also as the odour remover I have got doesn't seem to be working.

hi

try washing the carpet with biological washing powder it usually gets rid of the odour, i used puppy pads with my pup great are'nt they, they deffernantly helped with the toilet training but shes 6 months now and has just found a good game with them ripping them to shreds!! so i stopped leaving them down now and she only has the odd accident when i'm out, pups are very hard work!!
- By Carla Date 25.10.03 22:37 UTC
I think you will find he will circle a few times before squatting regardless of whether there is a smell or not - its one of the mail house training signs :) Remember, put him out when he wakes up, then he's eaten, when he circles, and when he stops playing. About every 20 minutes should do when he's awake - and don't expect too much :) Good luck :)

HI

try a product called CHECK from Stock Nutrition costs about £7.00 for a small bottle which dilutes to make 25 litres. I use it as an all round spray but it stops dogs weeing in the same spot so good for training puppies. Smells a bit peardroppy - see dog papers for more info. They also make Dynamite herbal flea/insect spray which is also excellent and more importantly SAFE. Have fun with your new baby!!

We use 'Odourfree', available from the Vets, quite pricey but is a large bottle and last for ages, great for kiddies accidents and getting rid of smelly stains!

I'm going to wash the carpet with biological washing powder, so I hope this will deter him from peeing inside. He sometimes waits by the door to be let out and if the door is open he will go to the back door. Not bad for 9weeks old. I know it's still a very long road ahead but he is getting better. He can do sits and downs with a bit of food bribery. I've just weighed him and he's 10kg already! He has started to go into his playpen on his own now, I think he quite likes it in there.
