Hi everyone we thought our dog walked to heel really well untill we saw someone with a whippet this morning doing a perfect heel we assume they show their dog and have gone to ringcraft lessons we were just wondering what tecniques are used to get a really good heel i'm sure i've read something about guiding canes or did I just make that up.

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve the trick to heeling well is to keep your pup's attention on you. Use a toy or closed hand with treats in. Start in a sit, touch dogs nose with hand/toy and say Heel in a bright happy voice. If you hold the lure low s/he wont jump up. Just a few steps with a pup and finish.Keep the lead on until s/he is totally reliable and distraction proof. Changing pace or direction as your pup gets the hang of it also keep attention on you. Have fun - some people here do heelwork to music.

The second trick is to keep practising!
