Just filled in one of those 'What dog is best for you?' questionairres and they have suggested a Bull Mastiff

I do love the breed (and most mastiffs) but never thought that I'd have the space for one, hence we picked staffi's. They've always come up with staffi high in the list but this one didn't even suggest it!)

Anyone else been surprised by one of these things?

I did a few of these before we got Molly and none of them suggested any of the breeds we were interested in. I did get quite a few terriers but no Westies.

When we'd done a lot of research into the breed and knew exactly what we were getting I tried one of them again and answered all of the questions deliberatley with a Westie in mind - such as high activity level/grooming needs etc and it still didn't suggest one!

Hiya
it comes up with a Rough Collie for me. Fairly close, I own a sheltie, a rough collie X GSd and a border collie. I would love to own a rough collie one day.

I lost all faith in those when one I completed, despite the information that smooth hair was essential, suggested a Rough Collie!!!
- By Steph33 [gb] Date 24.10.03 12:34 UTC
Yip, the same happened with me too. And I also typed in deliberate specifications, but it brought up something completely different. Waste of time.

It does make surprising suggestions. Our top dog is always a Weimeraner/Afghan Hound. My eldest daughter is besotted with the Weims but it is totally inappropriate at the moment as we lack experience. I dont have the patience to groom a long coated dog for hours so the Afghan is out, although I admire them at a distance. Sometimes I think its "dog of the day" with this programme.

i have also done a few of these and the suggestions have not been appropriate, apart from one who came up with a whippet - and i like those but feel they are too sensitive and prone to 'chase'.
not one came up with a JRT - which i now have and she is just perfect for us.

Hiya Bluebird
we've got a JRT too....15 months old. Arent they just fab dogs?? :) Ours is absolutely wonderful in the house, really obediant and soo loving and playful..but take him for a walk and he turns into the dog from hell !!! He just does not get on with other dogs when out walking :(
How is yours???
- By kaytee [gb] Date 24.10.03 20:04 UTC
hi steph, sorry to but in i have a jack russell. he is 5. we have had him for about 10 months and i am totally besotted (this from me who never wanted a dog until my son bought him home and both of them gave me the pleading big brown eyes bit). i agree about fighting other dogs. ours picks fights with any dog but especially german shepherds, perhaps because our neighbour has two of them, but i forgive him he makes up for it in every other way.

hi Steph33 - my JRT is just a 3.5 month old puppy. she has a lovely temperament, sweet natured and placid. have had no problems at all with her - so far! she is clean in the house and is great off the lead, coming when called and sitting on command, she's such a good girl.
she loves everyone and seems to like all dogs, but ignores those who ignore her - likewise with people.
i don't think bigger and older dogs like small dogs as they can get underneath them so easily, and can reach the vulnerable parts! she has been grumbled at but then she just runs back to me - so no bad experiences for her [or me!] so far.
she is full of life and is alert and active when out, then is quiet at home. she just seems to adapt to what is wanted of her.
glad you enjoy your JRT too - they are great characters aren't they. i know lots don't like them but i just think they are great dogs. my last dog was a JRT X and was also very sweet natured, with bags of character.

Those selectors never did me any good. I wonder if some people have actually gone on the advice of an online selector and ended up with a dog that was totally wrong for them. I too have tried answering the quiz with a CKCS in mind but the closest the list generated was 10th!

We had a JRT pup in our training class and he was awful. Non-stop barking, growling and baring of teeth the entire class. Wouldn't let anyone, human or dog go near him and he was only about 4-5 months old. Then again, the owners didn't know anything about behavioural training and would always comfort him when he was making a fuss. In contrast, a show JRT comes to the park regularly and he's a joy. Plays with all the other dogs in the group and very friendly and well socialised. Once I saw one trying to mount a Great Dane while it was sitting. There was wishful thinking! ;)

OOh if someone can give the web site address I would love to have a go at that!
- By Steph33 [gb] Date 25.10.03 10:04 UTC
I'm afraid to say but my JR would be just like that one in the training class :(
The thing is tho', he was socialised properly, and I never fussed him when he growled at other dogs, but he's just gone from bad to worse with all dogs he meets when out walking. It's an absolute nightmare. He was like that from the beginning. Honestly, in the house he is just perfect. VERY obedient. Knows his place, and accepts that. He is just perfect.
I don't know what I can do to combat this problem he has. When on his lead and passing any dogs, he goes crackers, barking, growling and pulling to get at them. If off his lead and he spots a dog before I do, then he's off.....no amount of recalling works. However, he comes back no problem if no dogs are about. He chases after them, and continues to chase if they run away, but if they stay and fight, then he does a runner, with his little tail between his legs.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but when he was a tiny puppy, and out walking, a lab puppy from round the corner shocked him by running out of it's garden, and jumped on him, playfully. He got the fright of his life.
My parents have dogs.....used to have a huge Bullmastiff (unfortunately had to be PTS) who Rocky loved. They now have a Norfolk and a Norwich Terrier, and he loves them too, gets on great with them, but then again, they are both puppies, younger than him.
When I got Rocky as a 6 week old pup, I got to meet both his mother and father, and they were such placid, excellent natured dogs.
Any tips or advice, or do you think he's too old to change now?? (15 months)

Bluebird my boxer loves little dogs. He always lays down to play with them his best friends are scrumpy the westie and Bailey the shitzsu. They love jumping allover him pulling his ears and jowls whilst he lies on his back. He simply loves them.

I like the sound of this thing, can someone give me a web address. We have more or less decided that the breed for us is a Cav, but would love to see what it picks out for me.
Very interesting !!!

There's one here to try!

Edit: Be warned - this one reckons a Finnish Lapphund is a medium/large dog with fine, smooth hair ...
- By Steph33 [gb] Date 25.10.03 09:50 UTC
what is a Finnish Lapphund REALLY like JG ??? I've never heard of that breed before??
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 25.10.03 09:58 UTC

- By Steph33 [gb] Date 25.10.03 10:07 UTC

I got a basinji or a australian cattle dog or a nova scocia duck tolling retriever
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 25.10.03 10:41 UTC
Asked for a wooly corded coat. Didn't mention any of the breeds with a wool coat. Finish Laphund was supposedly my top dog too. No SWD's in sight!!
- By BullBoy [gb] Date 25.10.03 11:43 UTC
I did the dog breed info one and it selected a Portugese Water Dog for me when i have bulldogs, frenchie's and staff's. Its quite funny though to see what breed apparently suites you best, ive done one which tells you which breed of dog YOU are aswell.
- By heidleberg [gb] Date 25.10.03 12:05 UTC
I did it, they selected English Setter as top choice, but they did also select labrador which i have,

I have just found a new test which I think is a lot better than the others, it was for me anyway:
[link]www.waltham.com/dogs/select_a_dog.html[/link]

Came up with bearded collie and border collie for me, which is right as I own a border. It also lists quite a few so that you can research them.

We did loads of these when we were first thinking about getting a dog we hadn't even heard of most of the dogs it advised and for a short haired dog that doesn't shed they advised a schnoodle and no we hadn't heard of those either!!.

cheers
Steve

Hurray!! just did the waltham test and it came out Whippet which we eventually chose so one works at least.
- By ginauk84 [gb] Date 27.10.03 15:10 UTC
That was probably an American test then a schnoodle is a poodle X shnauzer I believe I know America do a lot of crossbreeding and giving them names. We've always wondered what our rough collie X gsd would be. A rough shepherd maybe lol :-D
- By lilylaru [gb] Date 27.10.03 15:07 UTC
i just did the waltham test and JRT came second, which is lucky since I've just got one ! :)
- By Wishfairy [gb] Date 27.10.03 15:29 UTC
:D I did that one too and got British Bulldog and Staffordshire Bull Terrier... feel reassured now lol
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 27.10.03 18:28 UTC
The Waltham test is certainly the closest (gave me dals as my fourth selection) but they still think dogs with short, smooth hair include the Airedale (1st) and GSD (2nd)!
