Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / puppy 10 weeks wet or dry complete?
- By guest [gb] Date 24.10.03 12:22 UTC
Hi, can ten week old cocker spaniel pups eat their dry complete food dry or should we keep giving it wet until they are a bit older? My mum and I both have pups from the same litter. They eat absolutely every morsel of every meal but we were just wondering should we keep soaking and if so, what age do the pups have to be before they can just eat it dry?
many thanks for your advice

I think it depends on the pup. My 7 1/2 week old pups get theirs dry now, with just a splash of water to stop them scattering it everywhere (good game). I have had other pups where I have soaked it up to 12 weeks.

I gradually change from soaking a good while before feeding with quite hot boiled water, then I just put warm water on just before feeding, then use a little cold, and finally once opn their won fed it completely dry. I often put a bit of dry in a dish for pups to nibble at night when they are 5 weeks plus.

I never feed it just dry. I always tip a little warm water onto it just before I put the bowls down. Then I know they have some moisture in their stomachs and won't drink too much too quickly to compensate.

Always put a little warm water on the food before giving it, makes it smell nice, sometimes fancy it myself. Find the adults are too keen and splutter over it if it is dry, so a little water and shake to moisten each kibble, do the same for pups because it is a habit.
