Hi Mary,
Yes elderly dogs can suffer mentally like elderly people, but there is medication available which can often reverse the changes to a certain extent. (I think one of the remedies is called "Vivitonin" but I could be wrong.) Contact your vet. Good luck.

Yes, it is Vivitonin (not sure of the sp.). It's supposed to increase the blood supply to the brain. Maybe I could do with some!
Are you sure it's not just failing eyesight? Could be a combination.

Took my nearly 12 yr. old out and she had a senile demential moment today I think. My friend and I and our 4 dogs were walking in the park with my old girl following on behind, the next minute she disappeared!! Frantically shouting her and she wdn't. come back, she just carried on retracing her footsteps of where we had been. She has got failed eye sight in one eye but the other is fine and she's never done this before!! Just told her that she must be having an OAP moment!! Scary though, I know that they all grow old eventually but don't want it to happen just yet.

At times I think that she's going deaf, but she still hears me when I call her sexy bum, as she is docked and has a lovely waggy bottom!!

My Mars who we lost last year suffered upto a certain extent but still sat down with her and had our chats and she sort of looked at me although she understood :) She really showed signs at 14yrs old ! Excessive barking is another sign !

They do however do the wandering off thing and luckily they are so old do not go as fast and so are relatively easy to catch !

Min, Mars baby who is just 13 is showing small signs but touch wood seems to be keeping her marbles but for how long we shall see !! I think it keeps them going sometimes if there are youngsters in the house as she still gets in the thick of it when there is a playing session going on, keeps there mind and body active ! :)
