Hiya
We've always clipped Dizzy's claws, they get really long, but even when cut down to the quick they are still really long. She is a rough collie X GSD, some people think she is collie, but I am fed up of people telling me her claws are too long when I take her in a handling class at a companion show for example. They're not. I have seen lots of GSDs with long nails, is it a breed trait? As haven't seen any collies with long nails, do you think these people are thinking she is collie and so thinking her nails are too long? It just really annoys me as I know how to look after her and I tell people they're right down to the quick and they just give me this look as if to say 'yeh right.'

PS It just made me write this when someone said that they need clipping if they make a sound on a stone floor, and they do, but like I say are right down to the quick.

You're not alone Gina - I also had a dog with naturally long claws. I kept them as short as I could with the dremel but they were still longer than I would have like them to be.
Her toes were slightly splayed instead of being neatly compacted so the claw grew outwards instead of pointing down as much as my other dogs with beautifully short claws. They never got the same amount of wear and so the quick was longer.
Don't think it's a breed trait - just down to the shape of the individual dogs paws and how arched the toes are.
