Why does my pup dp this, He is nearly 8 months old and he suck his mothers ears.
It started with him just licking them, she would just lay there and let him do it, she obviously enjoys it.
I did try to stop him when I saw, by saying a firm no, then taking him else where.
But it is getting worse, he only has to be left alone with her for a moment and when I go to stroke Ruby her ears are soaking, and I mean dripping. I don't know how he can get them so wet in such a short time.
Any Ideas why he does this and how I can stop him before she decomes water logged :)
Is there something safe I could put on them.
Michelle & Doesy Toesy.

Couldn't help smiling as I read your post! Sorry, no advice, but does it matter if they both enjoy it?

But i think the ladys asking how to stop it?? anyone got any ideas

i know what she means by having to touch the wet ears..and not only that it cant be comfortable with wet ears all the time , she will get trench foot in her ears :D

dogs are bound to pick up germs now and again and these germs can be passed on very easy like that, i know alot of people let there dogs lick there lips :( and faces i think hey now what have they been eating? fox poo? .....not only that dose anyone fancy having to get the doc to remove tapeworms you picked up from your pooch:P
so i see your point in wanting to stop him. but sorry have no idea other then a no! im sure sumone else mightr be able to help you :)

Thanks Lovelylady, I was hoping someone would help.
I know it's not serious, And it is nice that they are that affectionate with each other, but if there was some way of stopping it, I would.
I love to stroke and tickle her ears, and I can't if they are all wet and slimey.
Also when they are wet they feel so cold, freezing in fact. I don't know if she feels the cold, but they feel so so cold to touch.
Also won't he get loads of hairs in his throat.
I thought they might of been something that I could put on them that tastes awful, so he wouldn't want to do it.

Well if it is worrying you try bitter apple on them.

Just a thought but the mother may have dirty ears and the pup is cleaning them ? Do you check her ears at all as it maybe worth giving them a claen yourself as dog earwax is a delicacy ! It is in my dogs anyway ! :)

I'm sure if he was after earwax wouldn't he be trying to lick inside her ears.
Plus he's only quite recently moved on to her ears, it used to be the top of her head.

Michelle - people are only trying to help reassure you, even if they don't have specific advice to stop it :)

Hi Michelle

When a dog cleans it's ears they sometimes use their paws in a similar way to cats and so if she had ear wax it could well be spread over her head and onto her ears ! :)

I had a Lab who suffered a lot with yukky ears and her pup used to have such good licking and sucking sessions :)

My lot now have been taught by the Pup now 13 to do this and so we never have to clean ears anymore :)

Thanks for advice Liz :)
But I really don't think my bitch has a problem with her ears. I havent actually cleaned inside her ears, but I do check them, and I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary. If they needed doing would there be a noticible build up of wax.
I think as everyone is saying, he must just enjoy it :) so i'll just have to put up with it and hope he stops on his own accord.

Hello,

I think it's become a habit to suck his mom's ears and Staffords are obsessive once they start something like tail chasing etc. Tosey has got the habit and if it bothers you stop him. Wean him off give him something else to do instead.
