Hi I am moving into to a new flat soon. Thing is my dog, if left confined for a period of time will dig up the carpets by the door or wherever he can't get out of. I can't win If I leave him in the hallway he'll just go at the front door. Now I am moving into a new flat in the next couple of weeks and I can't let this happen to the new flat. If I want to keep the knowledge that Iv'e got a dog from my landlord that is. I don't know what to do. Is there anyway of discouraging this behaviour. Or something to put down on the carpet to stop him doing it. I mean I just don't know because I can't be having Spike digging up the carpets at this new flat.

Well anyhelp with this would be appreciated Cheers.

Hi,

Don'e really have the same problem with my staffs the little one has taken to fence panels but I have spoken with a lot of owners and breeders of staffs who cage their staffs when they are out obviously not for long periods of time, which I don't like the idea of as I have out at work most of the day so that would not work for me, but if you got a large cage with plenty of room for a short period of time, this may help.

Hope this is of some use to you.

A cage might be the way to go but it sounds like he doesn't like to be 'trapped'. It could just be boredom when he's left alone. I know my friends Staffi eats her skirtingboards if he leaves him for longer than a couple of hours

sounds like he is bored try getting him a kong and other toys for him to play with while you are out there are several types of food balls that should keep him occupied. also take him for long walk or run before you go out so he will be tired and sleep more. the nylabone range of toys are also good as they cannot destroy them and they clean their teeth at the same time. does he actually chew the carpet if he does get some bitter apple spray and cover all the edges of the carpet as a chew deterrant. if you are not sure about how to use the kong email me and i will give instructions. hope this helps tracey

Hi I'm really sorry to have taken so long to reply to this post. But thats an excellent idea. Next week it's half term so I'll have some time with him and I'll buy him lots of toys for while I'm out. He doesn't actually eat the carpets but digs them up like digging a hole in the ground to hide his bone that sort of thing. I'm gonna give it a try see what he's like but if he digs up any of the carpets it's gonna cause a huge problem in this new flat. Well anyway cheers for your time.
