Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Fridge opening

My 13 month old boxer keeps opening my fridge and freezer and consuming any contents that take her fancy. I have had to resort to child locks on all low cupboards in the kitchen and sellotaping up the fridge and freezer when I go out. If the sellotape is not secure enough she manages to pull apart and gain entry. This has now become quite an issue as she used to only attempt this when left alone but recently the fridge door has been found open but nothing touched even when I am in the house. She is very clever she also lets herself in the back door by reaching up and pulling down the handle I just need to teach her to close the door behind her as it is getting colder now. Has anybody any ideas of how to stop the fridge opening saga. I never seem to catch her in the act so any punishment would be useless. Please help!

Turn the back door handle upside down ;)

What a clever idea!

Is there anyway you could fit an alarm to the fridge to give your boxer a fright when she opens it? That would stop her doing it again. Not sure if this is possible or not I have to admit.

LOL, I have visions of a bucket of water balanced carefullly on top of the freezer....that'd cool her courage! :D
No? OK, you can buy fridge/freezer locks from most baby shops, but hey, that's boring! ;)

I have tried a few child locks but they don't seem to be strong enough. I will have to investigate the fridge alarm though that might be worth a go. Trouble is all my time spent testing items out has cost me alot in food. I will have to remember to empty the fridge of goodies first.

Does she open it with her mouth or her paws? If she uses her mouth how about putting some of that anti chew spray on the handle.

why don't you just put something in front of the fridge when you go out to prevent her opening it, a chair or something heavier :)

Or a child gate across the kitchen door ...or just shut the kitchen door

In reply to shut kitchen door, she has to be left in the kitchen as this is the only place where she can do little damage to furniture etc. She could probably wreck a sofa in less than an hour. She has a huge problem with being left and always has had since we got her when she was eight months. She wrecks anything left lying around when she is left alone. If I am with her all day she is an absolute angel no trouble at all. Leave her for ten minutes she will run riot. I have left in the garden in the past but come home to find all my washing pulled off the line and on the floor and she has been sat in the rabbits hutch keeping the rabbit company.

I think she must use her paws to open the door but I have never caught her doing it. There is no handle she must just pull at the door. She is a very strong and powerful dog when she wants to be so I would really rather teach her some how not to do it than give her more of a challenge, like putting something in the way. The sellotape does normally work but I need to ensure I do a very good job, and I have forgotten in the past to tape it up. I now have a not on my back door. TAKE OUT RUBBISH,SELLOTAPE FRIDGE AND FREEZER,TURN ON TELEVISION,SHUT KITHCHEN DOOR,ENSURE THINGS ARE OUT OF REACH. Will things ever get any better?

Turning doorhandles upside-down doesn't allways work. It didn't with Krishna she soon worked that one out :D

I used to have a dog do this and before I discovered child locks I looped a piece of string round the fridge and over the door tying it tight enough to allow me to lift it off but the door could not open. Had to be careful it didn't drop off and get lost down the back:D

that piece of string idea sounds good saves all my sellotape and then I can just pull it back down when necessary I will be giving that a go soon as I will need to go to school soon. Fingers crossed!

I have got a magnet with the saying 'Fridge pickers wear bigger knickers'.You could get a picture of her and write that underneath it ! She may stop then :p

Sorry that wasn't very helpful was it :D
