Topic Dog Boards / Showing / LKA Show- advice and tips on champ shows

I am showing my puppy at open shows through november and I know there is a show in dec the LKA championship. I will have 3 shows to go to before this so I am hoping my pup will be ready. Is this the right thing to do or should I wait longer and enter champ shows next year? The form is due back tomorrow, i think it will be ok but the champ shows seems a bit daunting! Any advice or tips??????

Also, should i just enter the minor puppy or enter puppy aswell?

thanks

What you have to consider is the current temperament of your dog :-) LKA is indoors, it's big & it's noisey. This is not always the type of Show experienced people would pick to take a pup to for the first time :-) However if you feel your pup is bombproof then go for it.

I like to use the age specific class but it is annoying to be in minor puppy with 20 + and only 4 be in puppy....what breed are you talking about?

You might want to think about going to the show by yourself to see how a Championship Show differs :-)

The very first show I entered was a Champ show and although I did not have a clue and the puppy spent most of her time scratching we did OK and got placed second. I did not even know it qualified me for Crufts until I told them how I got on at Ringcraft the following week and they all went mad because I had qualified her at her & my first show.

LKA is a fun show, even if it is a Championship show it has a Christmas feel about it and if you can be laid back about it the pup should be happy enough, only enter one class and I would make that Minor Puppy, the judge will not expect the pup to be well behaved and you may be surprised how badly some pups will show up their experienced handlers.

hello, thanks for the advice. My pup is a golden retriever and quite well behaved at the moment :-) He will be 6 months old in november so being 7 months in december do you think i should just stick to minor puppy?

If it were me I would stick to Minor Puppy, if only because of the lack of experiance of both you and the puppy. No one including the judge will expect anything but a puppy behaving like a puppy.
