- By mari [ie] Date 02.10.03 21:31 UTC
My girl gave birth to 10 puppies last saturday.
All was well untill this morning
I checked them at 4 am and then at seven found one very stiff and chilled puppy
I cant understand it
I warmed her first with towel heated in microwave and then onto heat pad
I could not feed her untill afternoon as very very chilled,However she is still with me and fighting hard to live
I put the tube down her stomach and gave her supplement glucose and abidex
I removed tube two hours ago as she appeared stronger after getting 10 ml of synulox. She had feed from mom half an hour ago .
So maybe , fingers crossed for me and little minnie .

I always keep a hairdryer handy for chilled puppies or lambs. For some reason warm air from a hair dryer moved backwards and forwards over the baby seems to stimulate their circulation better than just direct warmth
Good luck

Thats a good idea Lynn I hope I dont need it, but yes in a hurry excellent .Thank you
Christine Gina Jackie ,Thanks for all the good wishes , :)
Little scrawny Minnie is back in with Mom and suckling.
Her Belly is no longer flat and she seems ok. I will check her every hour and see how she is thriving .
A lady who has an order in for a bullmastiff from me has phoned this morning and asked if she can have Minnie if she survives, as she always feels the surviver makes the best petand are closer to humans.
Never thought about that before but I suppose she might be right .
I dont know ,all i hope now is that she does survive as I had one hell of a fight to save her yesterday,I was talking to Gina as was worried about her little Molly
I carried on preparing a bottle as had removed the tube I sat her on my lap while talking not expecting much and to my delight she stared to suckle hard,I held the phone down for gina and she could hear her guzzling .She was amazed.
So keep those fingers crossed you guys .She might not go after all .Love Mari

Well Little scrawny Minnie is still, here with me I am getting more hopeful by the hour.
She seems a bit stronger and is snuggling into the others now instead of crawling away.
She is not out of the woods yet and needs to put a bit more weight on . but I am more happy about her now.

Hello Briedog I guess it is true then as a few others have the same opinion .
I guess they feel we are the Mom.

Well she is still alive and looking just as scrawny ,poor little thing I am rooting for her . I really did not think she had such fight in her.
My vet said all could change in an hour so not to be building myself up,so lol I am getting cramp in those crossed fingers .
I knew you would turn up sometime John lol.

Been a bit tied up recently Marie. A reunion on Thursday (did not go according to plan but that’s another story) Eye testing on Tuesday to take bookings for and an Extra-Ordinary General Meeting to prepare for on Wednesday so I've missed more on the board than I've seen!! Soon be back to normal.

Somehow, any dog we have had with a big problem seems to worm it's way even deeper into our hearts.

Thinking of you, John

Hi Everyone little Minnie is still here with me feeding well and looks a tiny bit fatter , She is on abidec baby drops and her Mom is feeding her full time now .
I am still not saying I saved her but as before maybe .
She is a little red bitch with sweetest little face anyone would love her.
This is mygirls second litter and her last .
I never take more then two litters from any bitch as I feel it is enough .
If all those survive she will have had 19 puppies in her four yrs , 9 from first litter and 10 this one ,so in my humble op thats enough for any bitch .So all going well she will be able to enjoy the rest of her life here .she has done more then enough for me.

Well it looks like not so scrawny Minnie will make it :)
Vet said she is thriving more now and if she gains a few more ounces by friday ,she should .
She is half the size of the others but is in there holding her own at moment .So not so cramped fingers now as I think she myself she is going to live
:):)

Thinking of you Mari and little Minnie, you`re both doing really well, still got fingers crossed (not quite as tightly) but had to uncross toes because I developed a strange limp while walking :)

Hello All My little Minnie died this morning at 2.45
I was very upset but she was never getting better as her kidneys were not developing . So although I tried very hard to save her it was not meant to be.
I have another one here not thriving much so will just have to keep trying .Sproggy is not able to fight her way to food either on teat or wean so I am feeding her every two hours [little amounts] and hoping for the best .she still looks only a week old the other ones are huge four times her size

So sorry marie :(
- By mari [ie] Date 31.10.03 11:16 UTC
Hello all just to update you on little sproggy
Well she has a mild aesophagus problem which accounts for the stunted growth.
She is now 2 lbs in weigh which is good as was only 8 ozs two weeks ago [the others are 7 and 8 lbs]
.She will need a small operation when she is 10 lbs in weight as she would not be strong enough now and way too young for an anesthetic.Until then she has to stay on strained food ,as solid stuff would probably choke her .

The good news is she is not upchucking her food so it is hopefully not as bad as some.
I am now wondering where that came from as I never even heard of it before now ,to our sorrow we do live and learn. She would if reached good size later not be bred from. I am going to do some research now as I would like to know what I an dealing with .
If anyone would like see how small and cute she is email me and I will send pic she is like in land of the giants lol.
She is now christened roo baby as she goes around in my pocket like a roo pouch.
I would be devastated if she died as she is so smart and happy .So again it is fingers and toes crossed for little braveheart .

Oh - Marie - you worked so hard! Do hope that the other little one pulls through - but as you say, it doesn't look so good - but you'll put in all the work, effort and love - as usual.

If only love & care were enough every time...

Hi all just a quick update. Sproggy is eating but still looks ribby.so I think maybe she wont make it. I have taken notes as I am keeping a record of my findings of them in the last ten years .
My poor bitch had a long delivery as they all do, that many puppies do not come in short time.
The last three out after oxytocin injection were minnie sproggy and the one that died on arrival.
I think perhaps in the womb they did not have the power to swim out,and needed the help to be born as did my bitch need help to bring them. She was exhausted bringing those last ones ,She pushed out the big ones fast and they appeared to want to get out . the other little ones just fell out in the end still and not as ready to suckle as the other eight .
So there was obvious something wrong in the first place when they took so long to come. All the puppies were the same size when born but the other eight started thriving at once.
Minnie was not bright and found it difficult to feed.no suction power. sproggy had a stronger grip on my finger when eating but not strong now.
I dont know if I am right or wrong trying to keep her alive but I feel I have to try and give her the chance.
A greyhound man told me when they see those ones they just let them go as all they bring is heartbreak.
I am just wondering what your thoughts are on this .
Mari
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.10.03 12:44 UTC
Just out of interest, Mari, how many matings were there? I have heard of pups from the second (or third) mating being born prematurely with the earlier (full-term) ones.

No help to you though, I know.
- By mari [ie] Date 21.10.03 17:44 UTC
There was two matings Jean and I had thought of that could be I just dont know.

Debbie thanks I have glucose in her drink .I put the tube down twice and pump it to the tummy so she does not dehydrate, she needs to wean in a hurry or she has no chance at all.She has to start using her survival instincts if she is going to live.
So I am teaspooning her heinz dinners into her and letting her sip her whelpi milk.
plus abidec baby drops twice a day.
I cant think what else to do .but I wont give up if she dont
Its a shame as she is so beautifully made tail swing past hocks and lovely face and little apple head. but so very small.Like a little mouse on stilts aww

Hi there sorry to hear about all your problems i hope little sproggy makes it.I have hand reared quite a few puppies now,not all with success but more lived than died,so something good came out of it.But for the ones that didnt suck or seem to have a strong enough suck on the bottle i syringe fed them really slowly and always added glucose to it they perked up in no time. And as they got stronger began accepting the bottle. But good luck with yours.

IO've done it with persian kittens Mari - when the queen pushes them away - or takes them out of the nest, you know - but me - I still keep trying - although I don't think I have actually managed to rear more than 1 or 2 over a period of about 12 years :( . Maybe there would be less heartbreak - but I just can't help myself - unless there is an obvious birth defect, I keep trying - while there is life, there is hope!
