hi i just need some help tying up a few lose ends with a old friend(long story)
he has brought a 8wk old staffie, when i asked him how much he paid for him he said it was for free because of the uclur and the breeder knew he'd have to pay the vet's bills for an operation for it to be removed which was done on wednesday.
i hope i dont sound too blonde but it just seems a horrible thing for a breeder to do.
any reponse from a breeder would be apprecaited

I don't think so, if the breeder vetted the home and made sure the pup was going to a good home, then said the pup was free as long as the op was done. Then I don't see anything wrong with that. Only as long as the knew owners were aware of it and it didn't bother them.

I don't understand why you think this was horrible??? the breeder could have had the operation done at their own cost and then sold the pup at normal price, if the operation left the4 pup fit and healthy with no more problem.

Having had an eye ulcer myself (very painful) caused by getting a blackbery cane in the eye while picking the fruit, it has left me with no problems, but they are painful and can be tricky to heal.

I have had a bitch with an eye ulcer and the operation if you can all it hat was to sew the third eyelid across the ey so allowing the ulcer to heal without being iritated by the dog rubbing at it. Ointment is able to permeate through to help with the healing. she wasn't a Puppy but in her second year of life, but could easily happen to a pup getting caught with a siblings claw, or the family cat taking a swipe.

some breeds due to their eye shape are more prone to eye Ulcers, but this isn't the case with my breed, it was just one of theose things. She has had several Eye Tests under the BVA schemnes, and only the one a few months after the Ulcer was treated showed a faint scar, but the next test this had heled completely.

Why is it horrible? The pup gets the treatment, the buyer gets the pup at an appropriate homing age, nobody is paying more than they should, and everything is open and above-board. From what you say in your post, there doesn't seem to be a problem ..... unless there is more that you haven't told us.

i myself wouldnt let the pup go if i was the breeder.
although the pup has been treated now how could they have been sure it would.
the breeder didnt know the owner and i'm sure if she did they wouldnt of let the pup go.

Why wouldn't they have let the pup go? Are they bad people/dog owners?

Well if this had been one of my puppies I would have had any neccessary surgery done 1st, then let the pup go to its new home. just my opinion. :)

If it had been my pup I would have had the op first then let it go, how can you trust someone to have the treatment done, especially when you're giving the pup away, they might just not bother.

thanks for all your help it just worry's me that more and more breeders are in it for the money(althought the pup was free) he's kc reg but how can the breeder be so sure without knowing the new owner the pup could of neglected with the ulcur, im looking to breed some time next year and i'd like to make sure i stay in contact with all the new owners.

You can never be sure about the people who buy your puppies. :( You just have to ask the questions, go with your gut feeling, and hope and pray that you've got it right.
