My 1yr springer has started to mark everything in sight, my son just came down in a new pair of jeans and the dog cocked his leg up and marked them for him, what is the best way to stop this happening in the house.

You'll have to catch him in the act and give him a short sharp 'NO' or a squirt with a water pistol or something like that. It'll mean following him around to do this for a while as timing is crucial. Try to catch him just before he cocks his leg or just as he lifts it but hasn't squirted yet to interrupt the behaviour. If you can't be there to follow him about then restrict his movement while you aren't available. It's important that he doesn't get away with it at all or you may be left with a very smelly problem :(
Make sure he has plenty of opportunities to have a wee outside with loads of praise when he does :)

Hi ,i have the same problem ,i have a 10month old westie x and have posted here a couple of times ,i have been given all sorts of suggestions ,and have tried them all, unfortunatly very little seems to help and we are all feeling at the end of our (collective)tether ,we all love her so much and in almost every other way she is faultless !but she is making life here very stressfull ,its as though she constantly has to mark her territory ,we have had a lot of problems with her and our cats ,but eventually seem to be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but i think the root of the problem is the cats !and i dont see anyway over this problem ,she just seems to HAVE to have the last word (or in this case scent !!)where ever the cats go she has to cover with her scent!!she spends a lot of time in the kitchen seperated by a stair gate, when we are around she sniffs all over but no scenting .. as soon as we turn our backs (for literally seconds not minuets)she is at it again ...we really do not know what is left to try..let me know if you manage to find anything that works good luck Sue & Lola xx.

Hi Lara, although I never saw my two guys mark their territory yet but for other things I use a water pistol and it works to perfection along with a sharp "NO" the other day I was looking for the pistol and I couldn't find the darn thing anywhere.... finally my wife found it while placing a clean matterass (not sure of the spelling sorry!!!) in his crate, well guess what!! the water pistol was all chewed up and he hid it
under the old materass what a rascal how in the world can you punish him for something like that? it was actually comical that I started to laugh a loud and Kobie my Lab didn't like that to much because he started to bark figuring that I would never find it so I can use it on him...
if they could only talk!!!!

Sincerely
Vic
