hi ya we had a horrible experiece lastnight my big boy randel [bullmastiff] chocked on one of these horrible things ,he had already eaten it about 10 mins before then started being sick but the chew was stuck in his throat and he couldnt get it out i was panicking which made matters worse then after what seems like ageshe finally got it up,but this chew had swollen up to twice its sizeand didnt look like it had evev been chewed.just wondering if anyone else had problems with these chews and if so why do they still sell them? debb
I'm glad your 'Bully' is ok after that experience. IMO, giving rawhide to dogs is like giving chewing gum to babies. The stuff is lethal!

what can i give him to chew on wont touch nylo bones fresh bones or anything like pigs ears just upset his stomach

Why not a black kong and stuff it with different things. I believe their was a post on here about all the different kinds of food you can stuff it with. The Nylabone Big Chews are good and they do last a long time. I have to buy the big ones because of Taz and my 4 boston's they are all big chewers. I have even found the gernade was good and held up to his jaws as well as the Galileo. I was going to buy the tire but looking at it Taz and the boston's would destroy that in no time I think. I do like alot of the Kong stuff. If he's a big chewer stay away from the plaque removers they are much softer and are easily chewed up.

I do give rawhide, but only used compressed rawhide bones for dogs that are heavy chewers and I would never leave a dog that really tore into rawhide alone with it. I would never give any dog the rawhide pieces they sell as I think it is way too easy for a dog to choke on it.
Dogs can choke and get blockages from almost anything sold for them to chew on. I once bought a hard cheese bone (a Nylabone edible) for a Yorkshire Terrier. The label said they would "chew on it for hours." Well, my Yorkie demolished it in ten minutes - and later threw up pieces that were more than an inch square. To this day I do not understand how she managed to swallow them in the first place. My young Cairn now I cannot give small dog biscuits - especially the ones that have a Cairn on the box -- because they get wedged into the roof of her mouth. Nothing wrong with the structure of her mouth, but she must try to inhale them whole.
If you dog is happy to chew safe things, like the Nylabones, than there is no reason to use rawhide at all. I use it, but certainly do not recommend it.

I know a black lab that had one of the raw hide bones with the knots on the end he swollwed one of the knots and he had to have an op to remove it When they opened him up it had swelled to twice the size it could of never passed through natrually.

After reading this posting I will no longer give raw hide chews to my 2 Cav pups, I thought they would be ok and love to chew them.......I wasn't prepared for accidents.
No more raw hide

I give my dogs rawhide but as soon as it gets to a size that is slightly bigger than I think they might choke on I take it off them. I never ever leave them alone with one.

This is what I like about this site - sensible information! I give my dog rawhide bones/chews although he doesn't go mad for them but he does play with them and eventually eat them. I'm going to stick to biscuits from now on. Thanx for info.

Most dogs are just fine with rawhide, I have never had any problems. However there are dogs that bolt food and anything else and of course unless these dogs are watched, inevitabley there is going to be trouble. The only other dog that I know of that got into trouble with hide is also a Bullmastiff, their mouths are huge and I think this one swallowed a big piece and he too choked on it. Glad the dog is ok now, and like you, if my dog was so inclined, I would avoid them in future too.
Dawn.
