Hi,

I'm not a dog owner personally, but I've just moved into a house with a resident STAFF terrier. The dog is generally very good natured but has a problem, it keeps urinating in the house!

I don't think the owner can do anything about the urinating and I'm starting to get fed up of it. The dog is no longer a puppy either, its old enough to know better and I think its doing it for attention.

Just wandered if you had any tips to deter the dog from doing this.

If it's a male, I expect it's scent marking. As with house training, it's up to the owner to teach the dog that doing it in the house isn't on. If the owner isn't bothered, I think I'd find somewhere else to live! Either that, or you could deal with the problem yourself I suppose - it means keeping an eagle eye on the dog all the time, then as soon as he starts to sniff or looks like he's going to cock his leg, shout a loud 'no', and get him outside as quick as poss.

If the dog hasn't been taught to do anything different then it will do what it wants :) Sounds to me like the owner needs to train the dog to wee outside , possibly by taking the dog out and using a specific word or phrase until the dog performs...we use *Hurry Up* ..once the dog performs give him lots of praise and attention.

When inside , the dog should probably be contained in a smallish area ...and then taken out for a wee at regular intervals. No punishment when he does wrong , but loads of praise when he performs well.

The dog is NOT old enough to know better unless he has been taught :) Speak to the owner and make him/her take responsibility for the dogs training
