Today when 2 men came to replace my kitchen units we found a rat nestin IN MY KITCHEN!!!!! I feel so disgusted! I can't believe it could have been sneaking round every night when I am in bed! All 3 of us screamed and it was running round the kitchen. I feel sooooooooo ashamed about this, it was living under the unit, behind the plinth....Ive gone totally overboard with the disinfectant, got the rat man out and put poison everywhere. Ive been going round looking for possible hiding places, and I m terrified to go up in the extension attic where all my christmas stuff is! How I'll ever sleep tonight I don't know....bet he's in the garden watchin the house, planning to move back in....

Dont feel ashamed pinklilies, the little pests push their way in anywhere on the offchance. Rodents seem to go on safari if theres building work anywhere - we got overrun with mice in my last place when a block of flats was built on the corner.

Did you see the programme a week or so ago where the lady had a rat living in her FREEZER?
- By suzy891 [gb] Date 17.10.03 20:56 UTC
Don`t be so ashamed Pinklilies, How many other people would have admitted it!!!

Bet it was nice and snug though with free bits of doggy food to munch on in the night.

At least its sorted now, lets hope they hadn`t arranged for a party tonight and invited all their mates round. :D

Did you see the telly this weekabout the "rat catchers etc" Urghhhhh makes me shudder. But they are closer than we think it seems.

The cat bringing in mice and magpies and blackbirds still alive, not to mention the odd baby rabbit is bad enough but the thought of Rats NO THANKS.

Ashamed to say we had rats once when living in the old house.
Apparently they were living under the shed, and coming into the house for food. We only knew when we found unusual markings in the snow, from shed to house and partner investigated, and found little holes and tunnels under shed. We never saw any droppings. We got the rat catchers out and they said as the dog slept in the shed it was giving them central heating. And any mess left by the dog gave them easy food. He said they were very clever, They always use the same route and they don't leave droppings everywhere like mice, thats why it's very hard to know you've got them.
Michelle.

Edit to say, We have now got 3 pet rats, which the kids love to bits. They are obviously not as intelligent as they don't seem to mind where they drop :D

Well at least you didnt wake up in the night & find one sat on your pillow like my neighbour did!!!
- By Sunbeams [gb] Date 18.10.03 18:47 UTC
That's horrible! I woke up once to find a spider on my pillow - that was bad enough! All these rat stories reminded me of my friend - going back about 15 years now - she went to go to the loo, glanced in (as you do!), and saw what she thought was a worm in there - next thing she realised it was a rat's tail, and it was swimming around in there. Apparently there'd been flooding affecting the drains, so that's how it got there, but she poured about two bottles of bleach down the toilet after that.

I came back in the house after being away to find loads of bluebottle flies on the bathroom and spare bedroom ceiling  - like something out of a horror movie :(
Have a horrible feeling that there is a dead rat in the attic but haven't been able to look yet. I've had them a couple of times and leave poison down up there so one has probably crept in and died up there :( Can't bear the thought of it floating in my water tank though :(

Many years ago (26 to be exact) we had just bought the house we now live in.It had a certain amount of old furniture in it and as we were going to knock 7 bells out of it we decided to live with what we had and buy new when we'd finished the alterations.
There was an old fashioned stand up larder in the kitchen and after making a cuppa one evening I opened it to get out a pack of bicckies and there staring me in the face was a RAT.
I went ballistic....screamed my head off.My fiance came running but the rat had dissapeared out of the back of the pantry and into the cavity in the wall.
Rat catcher reckoned that as we had the backdoor open all day to wheel rubble out to the skip she had slipped in.Anyway he put the stuff down and it worked, thank god coz when we took the floorboards up in the attic she'd made a nest there....nothing was in it thank god and we never found her dead body.Still gives you the creeps though

When I was younger and still living at home with the parents, I had been out for the night with a group of friends upon returning home sneaking around the house so as not to disturb anyone, I went to the bathroom and didn-t turn the light on, it was a real clear night and as I was leaving the bathroom I just happened to glance at the window and the moon was shining in and I could see a shadow of something, so I switched the bathroom light on and the window was open and a mouse/rat (didn-t notcie as I was out of there like a shot was hanging over the ledge of the window, right beneath the toilet which I had just used, I screamed the house down, mum thought something dreadful had happened to me. She threw a slipper at the window and the mouse/rat lost its balance. Apparently they are terrific climbers and can climb up walls etc no problem, thing was in the morning we expected to find a dead mouse/rat on the patio but no sign of blood or anything, it must have landed on its feet. Still get shudders to think that the mouse coudl have landed on me

Don't feel so bad - my sister had a pet rat. It used to run up and down inside her jumper. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Thankfully it died of rat flu. Urrrgghhhhh. I hate rats and there is only one thing worse -wasps. I once had to move because I had a wasps nest and I just knew they would come back! Well in my mind anyway! Hope your beastie has gone for good.

When I was at school my friend had a pet rat which she kept UNCAGED in her bedroom - disgusting! She let it sleep on her pillow at night! We had mice in our roof recently. They got in when we were doing some building work. My children screamed when they saw the trap hubbie bought ("poor little mousie!") so we caught them in a humane trap and released them in the woods (without the neighbours seeing!). No sign of them since.
