hi all, i was wondering if anyone of you had any ideas on this......

for the last week my dog has been crawling around on his belly on the carpets, he does this for about 5 minutes at a time constantly through the day, he has recently had his anul gland emptied and been frontlined, could this be causing it? :)

my hubby says if he wanted a snake he would buy one, cos thats what max looks like :D
any ideas??

Has there been any change in his diet recently?

Do you put carpet freshener on your carpet or wash his bed with biological powder/fabric softener? Wrong time of year for grass pollen allergy I think.

thanks for replying, no i haven't changed his diet and i wash his bedding in non-bio always have, he's been doing it today about every 15mins, i've had a look at his belly and its not sore and can't see anything that could be making him itchy, do you think it could be his way of stretching? because when he does it he stretches his whole body out :)

Jacki, my little lab suddenly started to do this about six months ago, she would rock backwards and forwards with her legs out behind her, scratching her stomache, or wriggling forwards doing the snake act. She was doing it compulsively, almost all the time, and she would snap her jaws shut as she did it, too, as if she was imagining she was biting at the itch. Then she discovered that she could scratch her stomache really nicely over the lip of the big plastic dog bed by rocking backwards and forwards over it, which meant that in a very short time she had worn all the fur off and her stomache was nearly bald. No sign of any reason for this and no scratching of any other part of her body. I tried all sorts of washes, creams etc., but nothing helped. Then I found a new home for a third dog I had recently taken in (couldn't trust her around my sheep) and almost immediately the little lab stopped scratching. Now the fur is nearly grown back and she is back to normal. Looking back over the events I can see that the scratching coincided with the arrival of the new dog and stopped when the dog left us. I think it was a stress-related thing. I didn't make the association at the time because there were no signs of anything amiss between the three dogs, they got on perfectly in all respects, they even ate together. However, on looking back, the little lab, who has always been a bit nervous, was pushed down the pecking order, and I think that because she isn't very confident this caused a nervous reaction. Certainly the itching stopped as soon as the doggy balance went back to what it had been before. Could it be a stress-related thing with your little dog? Hope this helps.
