Becks is just 13 weeks old and is happy and healthy but in the last few days he has started to moult excessively. If i cuddle him my clothes are literally covered in fur. Is this normal?

I always get covered in dog hair when i cuddle Buddy (male Westie 19months)a when i groom him there is always alot of hair comes away. I can't say if this is normal for all Westies but Buddy has always been like this. He does not have a wire like top coat and feels mostly smooth. Not true breed standard me thinks.
There are some experienced Westie owners on champdogs and i'm sure they'll come along soon with helpful advice.

Hi to the both of you,
What you will find is if you westie is clippered the top coat when needing removed will naturally moult a little, if the dog is hand stripped reguarly this doesn't happen as the old coat is always being removed..

Hi,
I believe Westies are very similar to Cairns. At about 12 weeks a Cairn puppy's top coat is about ready to fall out. Most breeders help it along by pulling the coat out - you just hold the end of the longest hairs and a gentle tug should be all that is needed to remove it.
Westies and Cairns also shed much of their undercoat at about this time of year. In Autumn they start to grow a new, cold weather undercoat. Spring they lose their Winter undercoat in exchange for the Summer version. If you brush against the hair with either soft slicker brush you should be able to take a lot of the shedding undercoat out.
