I can't believe it - Cam's only just got over an upset tum (and is still on the rice and chicken) but just now the bloo** idiot ate the hair-net I use for horse riding. It's not one of those really fine, 'human hair' nets, it's a big chunky slumber-net.
I've just rung the vet and she advised give him mustard to make him sick (tried it - he liked it) and failing that, give him some oil to lubricate his system and encourage it to pass through him. Plus, watch him for signs of distress and bring him in tomorrow if he becomes poorly.
What are the chances of this hair-net passing through him? He must have a fairly strong system because all sorts of things have appeared at the other end - including a pair of earplugs. Is he going to have to end up having an operation to remove it?
Oh, I could weep. Or scream. Or both!
Anyone still up?
Jo
I'm still up Jo ! Dunno what to suggest other than what your Vet has advised. Hopefully it'll just pass through his system.
Have a large drink, it won't help Cam, but might help calm your shattered nerves ;)
Hope all goes well

Thanks Liberty. I hoped someone might be up! Is it really possible for something so large to pass through his system? I've just got this awful vision of the vet having to operate on him to get it out. I just could not believe my eyes when I saw it disappearing down his throat.
Oh well, as hubby is in Wales at the moment I'm going to have to ring in work tomorrow with the excuse "Sorry I can't make it today, my dog's eaten a hair-net." That'll impress the chief exec. :D
Jo
I've heard of worse things making their way thru a dogs system, inc teatowels, tights etc. I wish there was more I could say to put your mind at ease. These things always seem to happen at the worst time, i.e. Hubby away, and most CD'ers fast asleep.
I'll be up for the next 30mins or so, if you need a friendly, if not so experienced ear :)
Chin up chuck:)

Hi Jo
How is Cam? I don't suppose anything has shown up yet. Sophie was a shocker for nicking things and eating them, usually food! SAhe nicked a home cooked pizza once and ate all the topping. My daughter captured the base and put it back on the plate!!! She also ate the 'string' from around a joint of meat - that passed through. Lola is a chewer rather than an eater. My new shoe has just been destroyed and she loves socks - doesn't care if you're wearing them either!!!
She still can't bark, she makes the most ridiculous sort of yapping come screeching noise!
I'm sure Cam will be fine, the net hasn't any sharp edges or anything and it shouldn't actually cause a blockage as things will go through the holes in the net.
Chin up :)

Jo how is cam this morning? I know how you feel Bradley ate my glass's, lens arms the lot.
Hi Jo, there`s a good chance it`ll pass thru him, but it`s just a matter of wait & see now. It can take a few dys to pass out tho, just watch him but the minute he shows any signs of being in take him straight to the vets. I watched one of mine swallow a sock & it took 3dys before he showed any symptoms.
Christine, Spain.
Forgot to say it doesn`t have to go thru him he could still vomit it back up, so keep an eye on him.

No advice I'm afraid, but I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one whose dog eats earplugs!!!
Hope you find what you are looking for today ;-)

I would think that the hairnet is similar to the netting wrapped round joints of meat? You know - the elasticated type? Mine have stolen, eaten and passed them through with no ill-effects!
Worst thing I can remember being eaten was a pair of baby's knitted bootees - passed cleanly through - Ade picked 'em up, washed them, & then thought I'd use them again

Thanks for your support everyone!
Cam is showing absolutely no ill effects today - other than an upset tum again. Thinking about it though, this is probably just his system trying to flush it out. It's probably why he's had a bad tummy all week - he has passed some really large chunks of wood over the last few days.
The reason I was so worried was because the vet had suggested I bring him in for an xray today and that they might have to operate. In the cold light of day this seems a bit extreme and hearing people's stories about the objects their dogs have devoured and survived I suspect it's 99.9% likely that it'll pass through his system without any trouble.
I wouldn't mind but this is the dog that turns his nose up at scrambled eggs!
Thanks again
Jo :)
just keep an eye on that upset tum.....if there is a degree of blockage , its often just runny stuff that gets past. if he doesnt get a formed poo by the end of the day, go to the vet ...you cant be too careful.
Hi Jo,
Mine ate a huge string mesh thingy from round a joint of beef when she was only a few months old and she passed it no problem. There was hardly any poo, just a sausage shaped roll of string!
Hope Cam is OK.

Hehe, yes the neighbours must think I'm obsessed with poo. If I'm not out in the yard encouraging Cam to do one, then I'm rummaging through it or discussing it's colour and consistency with my husband. OMG, somebody give me my life back, purlease. :D
Nope, nothing has come to pass yet. Number twos more normal though so fingers crossed.

I waited a couple of days for my Cairn to pass some unknown object she'd eaten. Eventually she barfed it up - a long packet of silicon beads that were used in packaging to soak up the moisture.
The net may not come out at the end you expect :-)

Any news yet Jo? Aren't dogs disgusting! Lola, sweet little girlie, went in the garden this morning and ate some 'barf'. Yuk!! It was probably produced by either George or the cats the night before. I shooed her away and cleared it up. She then had her breakfast and barfed that up!!! YUK :D
Annie :)
Dylan ate a beanbag Lizard when he was younger, took him 3 days before he threw it back up, but he was eating and toileting normally.
Hope Cam is well today!

Hurrah!
The hair-net has emerged from Cam's bottom, in a rather fetching sausage shape. Nice!
Thanks for your support Champdoggers, during these anxious times. You got me through it. :D
