Just a bit of advice please.. Cassie is a small 20 week old Norfolk Cross and she was last wormed by our vet with Drontal plus at 11 weeks, please can anyone tell me when I should worm her again and then how often. I am being given conflicting advice even by 2 different vets at our surgery .
Thanks

I worm my dog every six months I give him one lot then another 2 weeks later.

I worm my pups once a month untill they are six month old, then at 9 month then at a year, then every 6 month afterwards.

Surely that is excessive!! Wormers are very strong chemicals, even my vet wouldn't recommend that much. If you worm them thoroughly at 8 weeks then I wouldn't work them again until 6 months. Then again at a year - but I think the dog is a good indictaion whether they have worms, so once adult I would only worm them yearly unless there appearance etc indicates otherwise. Also, I give garlic regularly which does help keep them at bay but in no way should be used as a treatment just as a preventative

Can I ask how often regularly is on giving garlic? I have heard that garlic can be given but how much how often? I'm sure Cassie would love it..
Thanks Deb

I give them garlic & fenugreek tablets every day - they are really concentrated and help keep away all nasties! Fresh garlic can be used but you would have to give a lot to get the effect - mind you my dogs love garlic :)

We have wormed on this basis for the past 30 years and have never had any ill effects, I have children and grandchildren that mix freely with the dogs and a lot of licking and cuddling go's on I would rather be safe, some might see it as a bit over board but as I say I have not had a problem and my vets over the years have endorsted it has fine. The dogs also have garlic but there again they like garlic sauce and Kebab not on the regular diet, but straight from the bin given the chance
I was always told that a puppy should be wormed fortnightly until 12 weeks old, then monthly until 6 months old, then every 3 months thereafter - and none of my dogs have ever had a reaction to worming treatments

I would have to agree with Lilylaru...

I worm every month from 3 to 6 months of age and then every three to four months thereafter.
Dogs get worms, fleas, ticks, mites etc all the time. Prevention is better than cure so i would recommend preventitive treatment every three months. I use either Drontal or Panacure, for worms, depending on the amount the supplier has in sock.
Alternatively you could get a third opinion from another vet, if this one makes the same point as one of the two you have already spoken to then go with that!
Hope you get sorted :-)
