Hi all
When my GSD is spayed in new year, I am going to have her hips x-rayed as we would like to do agility with her. It's been suggested that I send these away for scoring, as rarely do people who don't intend to breed get pups hip scored, so breeders often don't know what hips a match is producing, and so this would be valuable information for the breeder. I spoke to my vet today, and there is no additional charge for the x-ray. How much is the fee to the KC for the scoring?
and how long does it take?
Thanks
Katrina

if you are doing agility it is wise to get your bitches hips scored BVA fee is £25.70, there is no KC fee heres a pdf
link that explains the scheme

Thanks Moonmaiden
Linked up to the site and read all about it. Will definitely proceed! Interestingly, one of the panel of scrutineers is the specialist orthopaedic surgeon who did the hip replacement operations on my previous GSD!
Thanks
Katrina

I have been quoted £140 for my bitch to be scored for breeding purposes. Its rediculous! They complain that too many people don't score and still breed, hightening the number of dogs hith HD. I begrudge the £66 it costs me for wormer let alone £140 for a routine health screen! I hand it over for the safty of my dogs but its so painfull.
Does anyone pay less?

it the ga that cost plus the x ray plates.it could take four plate to get a good one, then the bva cost, think i payed £120,00 last year.

I know its the BVA that bumps up the price but its rediculous. Its a routine health screen, similar to the cancer screens humans go through every three years and they are necessary in order to try and eliminate the problem in years to come. They are making a killing!

Just out of interest, how much does human health screening actually cost - when it's not done under the NHS? A bob or two, I expect.

We pay taxes luv ;-)

i donot think £25.70 is alot,it has not gone that much over 13 years which i have screen 6 dog in those years it the vets fees that but up the price on ga and xrays, not the bva.i would still have all my dogs hip /eyes test even if i didnt breed from them, just to know that if there is a problem i be awear of it,it not a routine health screen in some breeds.and it dose not eliminate hd, if you put to low scoring dogs together, you can still get hd,through the gene make or over excierse.

You miss my point, Miasmum! I said
not under the NHS!
Medical tests (whether for humans or animals) are expensive. The fact that the NHS (through our taxes) pays for ours is irrelevant. A true cost comparison would be between the prices of vet/BVA tests and human tests in the private sector.

Having just taken a Veterinary prescription to my chemist for a months worth of pills and being charged £90, I shall never complain about HNS prescription charges again.
AND if you have ever had private treatment and been given the bill to pass on to your insurance company - It gives you a real shock. Hospital treatment is incredibly expensive - makes vets look very reasonable (I have more confidence in my vets than my Dr anyway!).
The BVA cost has always seemed pretty reasonable to me.

I agree here JG, I've had an illness which treatment could have been progressed faster under private health but I couldn't afford it and the NHS have in fact done me proud. I think - and only my personal opinion here - if you have animals you just have to expect to pay, there is no canine NHS. To me its part and parcel. I've got insurance on them but I usually have to pay the excesses etc. It's not a cheap option to be a pet owner but its worth it :D
CG

The BVA fee is on their site & is under £28 Hardly bumping up the cost ! When one practice charges £120 & another £180 for the same thing it's the practice that gets the extra money not the BVA

we must have been emailing the post that the same time, great minds think alike.

But no one has to breed and the object of good breeding is not to get rich. The cost of health tests is an investment in your line and the financial repayment comes when any pups are sold, OK sometimes the score is poor, or the mating doesn't go well or there are no pups but that is the risk we take when we breed. If breeding guarenteed high returns all dog breeders would be rich and everyone would be breeding dogs - life just is not like that.
If you health test, worm and raise your puppies well, sensible puppy owners will be happy to pay a fair price so you shouldn't be out of pocket.

Out of every litter i breed i give the price of one pup to an animal charity. I object to the costs as those with low incomes cannot afford to provide the poper health screening for their dogs. Its the dogs who loose out in the long run.
My dogs cost me around £4500 a year to care for properly and i don't begrudge a single penny.

Was this place in Southampton where they do the scoring without putting the dog under full anesetic(sorry about spelling)but you know what I mean
Charm

yes there is.

We have just had Britney Dogue de Bordeaux hip scored and elbow's x-rayed and it was £191, at first it was just her hips and that was to be £99 but then we thought to save 2 anasthetice (my spelling gets worse by the hour) we would have both done at once, We traveled from Cambridgeshire to North Yorkshire but the vet was great and she talked us through all the xray's and gave her opinion on the score to be.
I had my 5yr old scored last September at a cost of £77 (inc BVA fee) which I thought was good. I was told that she would have a good hip score for her age and the result came back within 21 days and I was very pleased with score 2.2 - the same as her mums
Hi charm
Have emailed you the number

Hi Linda
Are you the Linda I think you are? Nutro, Petts Wood, Foal Farm Meggie?
Why did you decide to have your lab hip scored? How old is she now? Our instructor at agility told me about the place at Southampton and so did the osteopath that had labs that used to work on my Blue. I thought though that as she is being spayed (probably in January) I would take the opportunity to do it while she's anaesthetised anyway. She does very very little at agility at the moment, for obvious reasons, but she'll be approaching an age when that can be increased a bit, and I just don't want to make any potential situation worse. Also hoping to set my mind at rest (or not) after the health problems we had with Blue.
Great to hear from you - bound to bump into you again sometime. Love to Meggie and co.
Katrina
Hi Katrina
Yes,its me and meggie, from Foal Farm.
The place in Southhampton takes x-rays without using anaesthetic. This is why i went there.
Its a bit of a journey,But she is used to traveling as i show her.She qualified for cruffs at nine months,13 months now.
We may breed from her with the help of my breeder.Would like another one or two three or four.LOL
If you are having your pup dressed it makes sense to have the lot done at the same time.Hope you are fit for all that running your going to be doing at agility.lol
Best wishes Linda

Cost will vary according to how much GA has to be used - bigger breeds cost more & it's not like a routine health screen - or not one I've had. Never had to have a GA for one of those.
It's not always a good idea to have them x-rayed without a GA. My (smallish) bitch was sedated. It didn't work!!!!! She might not have been able to stand up, but she wasn't lying on her back with her legs apart for anyone. (can you blame her?) After 2 more doses we ended up with one very stressed bitch, 2 even more stressed out vets & one owner having a nervous breakdown. Once she was "out", it was done & dusted in minutes.

it was £150 for both my labs to have their hips xrayed under a G.A , and this included the bva fee, so is that cheap then?

I pay that for one dog around here, and that was nearly 3 years ago :(

Hi Linda
Well I am so impressed! Bet you never dreamed of this when you adopted Meggie did you? You sure started something!
I'm not daft, I'm doing the watching at agility - Glen's doing the running LOL!! I'm doing the much slower and sedate obedience. Well, its not really sedate with China!
Anyway, I'll look out for you at Crufts next year! You could be my claim to fame!

Charm / Linda
Can one of you please contact me with the Southampton vets number for hip scoring?
Cheers
Jayne
Please will you all be aware that the BVA and the KC do not agree with hip scoring without sedation. Talking about this on a public forum will get these people into a lot of trouble, I for one would not wish this to happen. It is not the BVA that charge excess but veterinary practices.
