In my opinion , you should trust your breeder ..if you don't then maybe you shouldn't buy from him/her? I read your post and was left wondering what your question actually was....hope that makes sense? :) Not trying to upse you at all.....
I think the price is probably about right , but others in that breed will be able to let you know for definite ...but if you are happy with the breeder and the paperwork is all in order , you have met *mum* and the breeder then only you can make up your mind whether you are likely to be ripped off. The breeder should provide a back up after the sale ..be there for you if you have problems . You should get a diet sheet to take home ....all sorts of things can show you whther a breeder is a decent sort or not ..but at the end of the day it will be up to you :)

Thanks Melody,
The reason for my post was to find out if there is a price guide for people new to pedigree dogs.
Our x breed cost us the princley sum of £10! of course pedigrees are expensive, but my question is ?how expensive is the norm?
It appears that from one end of the country to the other, prices vary so much.
I think though I will go with your advice, trust the breeder ,who I met quite by accident whilst in the area and as always my conversation turned to dogs!
Everyone I meet gets to hear of my impending new addition to our family home and many have said HOW MUCH??!!on occasions where they have enquired to the costs involved, so that just made me wonder.....

You better never ask how much Malamute pups cost then ;) :D :D

Hi,
The only guide I've come across is on the Petplanet site. Like house prices though, puppy prices vary across the country and from breed to breed. If someone has their heart set on a particular breed they are best advised to contact one of the breed clubs (the Kennel Club has a list) and make enquiries from the club secretary.

:) just checked out the petplanet site Thanks!
I just can't wait for this new pup!! We lost our dog in August, aged 14yrs and the house is so lonely without a dog in it!! I know I'll never replace her,I'm not trying to find a replacement for her, each and every dog has it's own character, but as my husband says "You're not such a happy person without a dog to fuss!" he even had the cheek to suggest I ask my doc for some happy pills

Roll on December!!!
prices do very greatly from one end of the country to another, i live in the south east and paid £220 for my lab bitch, i knew her breeders personally and got her £100 less than i would have done if i hadnt, they sell their chocolate labs at £450-£500 and blacks and yellows £300-£350 which is about the price in most of the country, but my brother and his fiance came down from manchester for the weekend, and normally they can get thing cheaper than we can, but i was shocked to hear that a friend of Karen (my sister in law) had paid in full on a labrador bitch chocolate, only 3 weeks at present you need to sit down £800, the person in question is buying the pup off a friend AND the parents arent health checked, the person has been told that she is being ripped of but as her daughter has fallen in love with the pup wont back out.
i couldnt believe it that they were charging £300 more than breeders down south
Hi porkie
Our first KC reg BC (now 4) cost us £250.
Our 2nd cost us £300 and her parents had all the right health tests, hip scores, both have CC's, and a fantastic temperment. Included with the £300 was lifelong aftersales advice, and microchipping once the dog reached 6 months old (provide breeder with receipt and she'll pay for it).
Can I ask you what breeder it is that you're getting a pup from and what breeding are the mum and dad?

Hello
Yes I know her, she breeds Moshanta doesn't she?
Do you know which bitch she's using? We were going to get one from her but decided that the bitch she was using was too laid back and we weren't ready for one at that time.
When are you getting the pup? The pups IMO would be worth £400, very well raised and socialised and very, very good quality breeding.
Char123
P.S What breeding is the dad (sorry for being nosy)?

Hi Char123,
I haven't got the full info yet on the dogs just couldn't take in all of the certs.etc at the first meeting, too excited to meet the mum to be !but when I know more I'll let you know.Glad to hear that Trish is known for her well bred puppies! The dam ?Frere ,probably spelt that one wrong :( had one litter about 18months ago,as we met one of the pups.I cannot wait to meet the new litter which is due around the 23rd Oct. but of course we will not see them for a few weeks after that date.
Ah yes, Freya. I remember her being in the YKC obedience team at crufts with Trish's daughter, Danielle. Are you looking for a show dog, agility etc or just a pet?

Hi Char123
Just a pet, companion, family member,BUT if I learn more about agility and obedience then who knows?? I would not 'show' though never been one interested to do that.I am considering puppy training this time around,if I can find a local class to attend.
Our first dog was from an 'accidental' litter from a local family who sadly let their dog 'stray',very irresponsible of them!
This time we have done a lot more research, although to be honest I met Trish quite by chance (fate?!) whilst working in the area where she lives,my good fortune! Don't worry I shall keep everyone updated on the new puppy as and when!
Having found this site I'm hooked. My first post (to which you gave some sound advice) was enquirying initially about bc's and now I feel confident that our choice has been correct, but I don't doubt I'll have loads more questions for everyone once the puppy comes home and probably even before that date :)

Hiya
A friend of my had a merle collie from good lines, health checks, vaccs etc etc £200, is this collie from really good lines or something? It just seems a little too expensive as there are lots of collie litters around - I paid £400 for my sheltie and that is the going rate, I spoke to loads of breeders about litters, have you done research into other breeders too?

Perhaps it is a case of are you happy to pay the asking price for this puppy from this breeder. When you buy a pup you also buy the help and support of the breeder, if you are happy that the breeder will be there for you for as long as you may need help and you think that the pup is well bred and the dam & sire are fit then to you the pup is worth the amount you are willing to pay.

The going price for a KC registered Border Collie is around £350 - £400. For this price the dog and the bitch should be hipscored, and eye tested. The breeder should also be eye testing the puppies at around 5-6 weeks. If you haven't got this then the price I feel is too high.
Ask the breeder for a copy of the pedigree and contact the Kennel Club who will tell you what the sire and dams hip scores are if the breeder cannot produce a copy of the certificate. The total score for each dog should be below 13.
IMO it is essential to have these tests on a Border Collie, if these pups haven't then come back and I can put you in touch with someone who holds a puppy list of breeders who will have.
Good Luck
Sandra

& they should be hearing tested as well

Hi,
I don't understand how a yellow or black labrador should sell for less than a chocolate ?
Is fashion the deciding price here?
Goldens whether dark gold, mid gold or cream all sell 450-500 approx no matter where you are in the country. These are from reputable breeders health checked, full aftersales service etc that I know of.
Puzzled Briony :-)
most breeders i have spoken to sell their chocolates for more than the blacks or yellows, to be honest i think the black labs are the best labs, i know colour doesnt make much difference work, pet and show wise but i am hooke don black labs, (despite the fact i own a yellow one) i have also found that most choc studs have higher fees than blacks and yellows, (but then i was looking at show dogs) but £800 for a choc lab is way too much, and the people paying this wont listen to the fact that they are being ripped off, its a case of breeding for money with the pups in that litter :(

I cannot understand how a genuine breeder of Liver labs can charge more for just colour. Surely first and foremost a alab is a Lab, and didffferentiating prices for colours in any breed is just cashing in on fashion, and is not responsible in my view.
Hello,
A friend had a working black lab bitch, put it to a black lab FTCH - stud fee was £1000, bitch produced 7 lovely pups - in your opinion is this too much or okay?

Way,
way way over the top!!!

In my experience, stud fees are never more than the price of a puppy - usually slightly less.
:)
the average stud fee for a lab is between £300-£500 not many near the £500 mark though
