hi can anybody help on this one??.

we would like to export a dog from the usa ,can this dog be carried in the passenger area with the owner or does it have to be held in the cargo hold as in a sealed container because of rabies condsiderations, does anybody know of a less stressfull way of travelling with a pet from the usa.Does anyone know of a way through the red tape. here goes....

I think (not sure) that it will have to go in cargo - not because of rabies, but because of airline restrictions. Would suggest you contact the airlines who will transport dogs from the part of the USA it will be travelling from.

Hi, first things first. It has to travel in the cargo area, in a suitably sized, secure, ventilated carrying box. Rest of details depends if you are bringing it in under Pet Passports or Quarantine. Only certain airlines are registered for Pet Passports, so if you use one of these, and providing that all the Pet Passport requirementgs are fulfilled (microchip, rabies shots, blood tests and waiting period) then the dog can be collected straight from the airline. If a non Pet Passport Airline is used thenthe dog would have to serve a little time (2 or 3 days) at a quarantine facility while all Pet Passport details were checked out by Defra approved Vet.

If the dog is now "Pet Passported" , of course, then it has to serve its 6 months in quarantine, regardless of Airline used. Someone queried a few weeks ago if dogs could travel across the atlantic on the QE2 - did anyone know the answer to this? Also (if money is no object) there are now one or two "private Jet Charter" companies who are pet passported, so you could charter an executive Jet and the dog travel in luxury.
bye

Check with lots of airlines, but most airlines have restrictions on the the weight and size of container allowed in the cabin. I am very unhappy about dogs travelling in the hold (yes I know it is pressurised and heated) as so many things can (and do) go wrong.
You don't fancy a sea crossing?

excuse me for being dopey...but if they go in a crate in the hold, how do they wee and poo?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 16.10.03 18:26 UTC
They have no alternative than to go in their crate. :(

They have to mess and pee in their (small) crate - not much of a journey for the poor dog and you can double the flight time for most journeys as there are formalities to be completed at each end and in the case of quarentine the crates must not be opened until they are at the kennels. The poor dogs must try to "hang on" desperately for hours before they give up and mess their crates.
