hi, how can i get a 7month staffy to eat better?
he is given pedigree chum tin food and also bakers complete or pedigree dry food. some days he seems to eat well but others he hardly eats a thing. He is growing well but it worries me that he should eat more.
Any ideas?

Hi think about the following - is he over/underweight? Is he getting enough exercise to make him hungry? Is he getting titbits/treats between meals? If he is the right weight for his breed and age and has energy hes probably okay. Stop letting him have scraps is this is a problem and adjust his exercise if necessary.

Why feed a complete plus a tin? Tinned food is given with a mixer and the complete needs no supplements. Pick the one he likes, you want to give him and DONT CHANGE IT as variety leads to pickiness. Bear in mind most dogs will eat 3/4 of the reccomended daily amounts on commercial foods and in cold weather or when exercising a lot might eat more.

If hes picky allow time limited food access and dont feed him at all between meals. There are folk here who can advise about your breed, this is general observations from my mistakes. :)

I would take him off those foods and give Autarky complete in morning and green tripe ( raw) and terrier meal in the evening.

thanks alot for your reply. the reason Barney has tin and dry food is that some days he seems to prefer one or the other. I wish that he would just stick to one! What would be the best way for me to introduce the food you recommend and would i get it at the local pet store?
He gets excersised every day but at the late afternoon as i work till 3.30 each day,he seems to eat better at night. Could it be that as he is in the house all day he doesn't feel like eating till he has worked up an appetite?
He is growing really well and he looks big for his age. I just worry that he should eat better. I am definatly going to try with time limits on his mealtimes as at the minuite i leave the food for him to eat at his leisure. here goes fingers crossed.

Autarky and Hills Science Diet are available at the chains like PetsatHome. Some vets have free samples of completes you can try first. Always change his diet gradually over at least 7 days by adding in the new food and gradually cutting back the old. If you moisten the complete first with a bit hot water it might encourage him. If you are taking his food up after a limited time I would change that routine first then go for the new food. Remember he wont starve and if he turns up his nose at his food, TOUGH TILL NEXT TIME. :)
