Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / bitch humping my leg..
- By minstrel [gb] Date 16.10.03 08:19 UTC
why?

its quite disturbing considering she is female..

also having a bit of a battle of dominance at the moment with her...

she seems to deliberatly not listen and occasionally she will bait me with one of her toys, ie when i go to get it she will run away, then come back to tease me again..

I understand she is challenging me, whats the best way to overcome this?

I've never had this problem. Someone will be along soon i'm sure.
I have a book called Think dog by John fisher. There is a referance to this problem in there i am sure. Unfortunately a pal has it, her lab won't behave lol.
Hope someone else is of more help.

First of all, how old is she? She sounds perfectly normal! Both dog and bitch puppies hump each other in the nest, and many carry on, not through 'dominance', but because it feels good! And baiting you with toys - she's asking for a game, and you are responding! What games do you play with her?

She is a chocolate Lab, 15 weeks old and 16kg.

She gets regular games, walks interaction etc...

Wasnt sure of the humping, but if you say this is normal then fine...

As she is a lab, it should be easier than with many other breeds to get her to bring you the toy for reward and praise. You will find this a very useful skill in the future. So don't try to grab the toy, but call her to you (ignoring the toy) with a food bribe if necessary, and give her loads of effusive praise before you swop the toy for a titbit. At this stage I wouldn't try toget her to drop it - you want her to give things right into your hand.

Have fun with her - remember (though I'm sure you already know!) that training and playing are very much the same thing!

Thanks

She actually does the retrieving bit, and responds to 'leave'... she is a lovely dog and it is quite funny when I wake up around 6 and go down to feed her, her first thoughts (after jumping on my like a mad woman) is to go to the front door and try and get her lead of the hook....

Thanks again

I should have made it clearer - the humping is normal, but it doesn't mean it's necessarily desirable! It probably isn't a 'dominance' issue, but a normal behavioural issue. It's probably best to calmly say "No" when she does it, and put her in her bed for a minute. Then, when she has been good you can play with her for a few minutes as her reward. Just make sure there is a definite 'break' between the humping and the game, so that she can't start to use humping as a cue to play.
