Topic Dog Boards / Health / Bitch in season - what a mess!
- By digger [gb] Date 06.02.02 19:11 UTC
My 2 year old rescued ESS bitch has just started her season - even though we were told by vet and rescue charity that she'd been spayed.... :-( My other dog isn't spayed and is meticulous about her hygeine when she is in season - but Missy is becoming a sore point between hubby and me :-( Does anyone have any ideas what I can do about it this time before she's spayed in April time? (We think she's had a litter at some time - her nipples and vulva are far more pronounced than any other female dog I've ever had - but then I've never bred.....)

No useful advice. Just my commiserations. TH is in season at the mo. Horrid isn't it.

what about using a crate--inbetween playing in the garden-yard,-or a saucey pair of knickers, i believe you can buy proper ones for bitches in season, or shoot the husband!

I found that an old pair of knickers with a hole cut out used to do the trick. Two Labs in season at the same time did make a bit of a mess especially as both of them seemed to lazy to clean themselves up ! I even took them for a walk with them on but only in the dark late at night and the crack of sparrows as I think they felt a bit self concious !! (Also to avoid meeting any other dogs!)

Petcetera do "pet pants" which are supposed to be ideal for bitches in season. they are washable and come in black, white, grey, beige and brown. I don't know whether I have a current price list but the price ranged from 5.95 to 8.50 depending on waist size. Give them a ring, I have used Petcetera in the past and they are very quick in delivering your order. Telephone is 01482 665783. Good luck with them

Unfortunatly its hard to tell if a bitch is spayed and if the rescue charity was told she was then they would have thought so,we had that happen to us where owners signing in dogs tell you things and they are not true.
Anyway no real advice for you But Bac To Nature do bitch spray which is good and their other sprays for house etc are Brilliant they dont cover smells they actually dissolve the bacteria causing the smells.
Good Luck

Thanks for all the advise folks :-) Solved the problem - and it didn't involve violence ;-) Went down to Matalan and got 5 pairs of 'girlie' knickers (turned down the ones that advocated 'cat power' <G>) age 8-10 for £2.50- they are a little baggy :-( but I figured we needed the 'leg room' but we've cut a tail hole and she's been an absolute trooper - tried to get them off a couple of times, but I waved the choccie drops under her nose and she soon forgot!

Now how to explain it to the kids..........

Oh well.

We have 3 ESS bitches and every one of them is different when they come into season. Our 2 youngest(18months) are from the same litter one of them u could hardly tell she was on heat at all and the other was really swollen and bleeding heavily ,neither have been spayed so I think like us women some get it bad and some are just lucky.A good supply of cheop knicks does the trick and help keeps down the mess.Good luck!!!

I must be very lucky don't get this problem with Molly my Boarder Collie. She is very clean and when we first got her I did not know she had started her season until she ran off one day! Luckly we managed to call her back. Just little drips if you know what I mean?! And at night on her bed was a little bit of a mess nothing the old washing machine could not solve! Molly is due for her op later this year.

We bought a pair of 'whippet panties' from someone on one of my whippet lists - she makes them specially in funky colours - you put 1/2 a pantyliner in and don't even have to wash the panties. She's not had a season yet, but we've had the panties on her every so often to get her used to them before she 'has' to have them on. She put up a huge fuss at first, but now she pays no attention at all.
