Topic Dog Boards / Health / bowel control help :(

You all know that Dozer was born with a rectal prolapse, he is 2 years old. This morning his kennel was full of poo (He whines at night if he needs to go out and we never got there fast enough to let him out), bathed and clean him and washed down the kennel (and T-bone since she sleeps with him). Then after that their was a little turd on my couch with a little mucus and maybe a drop of blood, he has never done that before he always asks to go out when we are at home (kenneled when we are not). He will go to the door and scratch at it, can't understand why their would of been poo on my couch and I know it was him cause I wiped his little bottom. Sometimes his rectom goes in and others times it remains out. Do you think due to his rectal prolapse he could be starting to lose control of his bowels? I just found it very weird to find poop there because he always asks at the door, just wondering if he may be losing control and thought maybe all of you could shed some light on this. Thank you :(

Isn't surgery possible for Dozer? Humans sometimes suffer from rectal prolapse and it can corrected or improved with surgery.

I do not know if prolapse causes incontinence, but if he is pooing in the house when he did not before it could be from something else entirely. I would not worry unless it happens again.

So far he has been good. :) We are very glad for that. I think he maybe had a little upset tummy and his bum was probably sore. He is still his happy self :) went for a walk with him and Taz yesterday and they both loved it :) I think I just got over worried.

Yes there is surgery (sowing his rectom to his colon) but we were told only a 50% chance it would work, and he may get a lot of infections and have to be on antibiotics ect ect. The cons out weighed the pro's. We did do a purse string on him when he was 2 months old but it never worked at all :(. We were told that it may get worse, or he may develop muscle to keep his bum in, he may live a year or two or maybe 10 it all depends on the tissue of his bum. We do keep him very clean and get regular vet visits to make sure all is well.
Thank you for replying to my post very appreciated :)

"I just got over worried"

That's my specialist subject too - panic and worry :-)

Guess I can put it all down to the poops, the poor lil guy woke my hubby up at 3am this morning to go out. Thank god we heard him. Poor little soul now has to sleep by himself since he messes his kennel.

Ya I'm a worry wort, hubby says I worry more about the dogs then him, I just keep telling him because he can tell me whats wrong and they can't :D

ttfn :)

Hi Vic,

It was a terrible war. I remember watching the television with husband no. 1 to see what number his birth date would draw. He didn't have to go, but his brother did and had an easy time of it in Thailand serving wine in the officers club. Many of my friends ended messed up for life from that "conflict". Unfortunately, history repeats itself over and over again.
