I have a four year old Boarder collie called Molly. We have only had for for one a yyear. We got her from Battersea Dogs Home poor lass. She has not had a nice sstart to her short life. My question is that Molly is mainly all white, apart from two back patches on her back and head. She is losing fur like no tomorrow big clumps coming out. Last year she did the same thing and you can see her pink sking in places. Last year we did take Molly to the vet to get her checked over and the vet sais that dogs with mainly white fur shed a lot of it? And that was that. Just wondering whether any one else has had this probelm? May be Molly is getting ready for the spring already! Kind regards.

Welcome to the forum Julieann :-)

I have a bracco who's base colour is white. Bracchi that are kennelled tend to drop their coats in the most spectacular fashion and if your not ready for it, it can be a quite frightening experience! Although they are a short coated breed they tend to lose their coats in small 'clumps' the size of your finger nail, but all over their body. Until they have finished shedding they look like they have had mange or a very bad skin complaint. The coat grows back perfectly, afterwards but it looks pretty awful whilst it happens. I have seen it mainly in white based bracchi, but it does tend to be kennel dogs of both colours.

On a trip to the Italian mountains in early springtime, we saw working white GSD and Maremma who were dropping their coats in clumps. These dogs all lived outside with the sheep they were guarding though.
