Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / walking to heel
- By shadow [gb] Date 08.02.02 12:06 UTC
my GSD shadow is really quite good on the lead, but does pull if he wants to get to something or someone, and as he is 4 stone already, I need to make sure that he is well trained now before he gets even bigger.
He usually walks to heel better when he is not on the lead.
My husband is stronger in mind as well as body than me and will check him with the lead and tell him to heel every time he gets even slightly in front, whereas being right handed and have him on my left, my left arm is obviously less strong to do this repeatedly.
I usually carry treats to achieve the same thing, but sometimes this just excites him and causes him to jump about.
Any tips on how to make sure I am the most important thing to concentrate on while we are out and about.

The new edition of Your Dog (March 2002) has got an interesting article in it about a GSD that pulls, if you'd like the article, just email me and I'll send it to you.

Shadow, have you tried using a headcollar on your dog? The Gentle Leader I believe is quite good, this way you can keep firm but gentle control on your dog without choking him every time he pulls!
I think headcollars are a good idea for city walkers too, because people see them and think the dog is muzzled so you won't get total strangers just walking up and starting to pet your dog without even asking!! I find that so annoying!
