I have just brought home my 6 week old labrador puupy and I was wondering when to start worming. I have read somewhere on here about different worming tablets but I can't find it. Can anyone advise which tablets are best, that don't make the puppies sick.

I think it's recommended at 4-6 & 8 weeks, we only got ours at 12 weeks and she has been wormed 3x and she is now 7months. (Once when we got her then after 2weeks then again at 6months)
She was wormed with one from the vets. (sorry can't remember).
But i would take her to the vets asap for a check and they will tell you everything.

I agree with mygirl, i got my lab at 8wks old took him down the vets for check up, and sorted worming/vaccinations glad i took him because the vet noticed he had mites and took a scraping so Toby got treated quickly, had to treat the whole house too,
good luck with your new pup.

You need to know when the breeder last wormed the pup, and work from there.

Also depeneding on product use puppies should be wormed monthly to 6 months of age. It is mainly puppies and Pregnant bitches that carry roundworms, so it is important to worm them particularly regularly.
If you have a pup over 7 1/2 8 weeks of age, chances are it weojn't need worming until 12 weeks. I note yours is only 6 weeks, so may need to be wormed again now, and then again at 12 weeks.
If you use the old fashioned Piperazine *which only works on adult worms) then the pups will need worming two weekly. The newer wormesr are given less frequenly as they also tackle the larval stages.
The two most popular ar panacur and Drontal Puppy Suspension.

Surely the breeder of your puppy advised you when the puppy was next due for worming. Most breeders I know state this on the puppys diet sheet. Go to the vet for advice on this. You say the puppy is 6 weeks old............who lets puppys go at this age???. It makes me so angry, they are still so very vulnerable at this age.

Hi
My puppies get done with Pancur 10% (vets) at 3, 5 and again at 7 1/2 weeks(as its a 3 day course, so i start 3 days early so it is finished before leaving us), we then advise people to take with them there worming card that i give them to the vets when they have there first jab, they will say then when next one is due.
Hi Trudos, nice to know some do it right, as i said above Toby had mites, and when i picked him up i asked if he had been wormed and the lady told me she had wormed him that week, so the vet said if thats so we cant worm him again yet, took him home and found he had worms so she couldnt have wormed him, took him to vet and they sorted him out,
Heidi
ps After Toby was wormed couldnt believe how many worms came out, poor boy but now he is fit and healthy, vets very pleased with him .

I ALWAYS worm a puppy in front of the new owner, before it leaves. This then makes the owner aware that it HAS been wormed, and I give a written record of the dates of worming and the worming product used. I have heard too many tales of vets saying to worm again, just to be sure. And before anyone asks, they travel fine after the worming, as I do it as soon as the new owner arrives so it has time to settle.
Hi everyone-When I got my latest pup, Kester, he was just over 6 1/2 weeks old and had been wormed twice by the breeder. I then wormed him at 8 weeks and 12 weeks. Hes 5 1/2 months now so gets wormed every month to 6 weeks. When he's an adult I'll do him with my adult bitch and she gets done every 3 months.
I use Panacur suspension (liquid) which I mix with the food - I buy it from Vetmedic.co.uk which is an online pharmacy and get it 2 bottles at a time (lasts 2 dogs about 1 year!) when I buy my cortavet.
Enjoy your pup-take loads of photos-they're not that small for very long!

I worm my bitches from the 39th day of gestation through to 2 weeks post whelping - slightly more than the recommended regime. The reason is that I worm the pups at 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 weeks for three days at a time, so I worm the bitch until the pups have finished their first three day worming at 2 weeks. That way I feel that the pups have unbroken protection from pre-birth upto the start of their own worming programme. I like my pups to go home about 2-4 days before they are 8 weeks, then they can have a couple of days to settle in and get their first Jab bang on 8 weeks to make the most of early socialisation. It also means that the vet can weigh the pup an give wormer for a worming between 8-8.5 weeks. I recommend worming on at 12 and 16 weeks then monthly to 6 months and every 4-6 months for life. I give my puppy owners a schedule with all the working history and a recommendation to continue with. If the vets wants to do something different she can agree that with the new owners but most carry on with my schedule. I use Panacur 10% - I haven't seen a worm for years in pups that I have bred.
Ring the breeder and ask them to confirm what worming schedule they used so you can discuss it with your vet.
I do agree that 6 weeks is young to go home.

Hi Mel
We got Molly at 8 weeks and took her to the vets 2 days after we got her for a free puppy check - it may be worth checking to see if your vets do a similar thing? They gave us a free flea treatment (to be used later) and also some Panacur paste. This should be used monthly on three consecutive days up to the age of 6 months. The paste is good as you can squeeze it straight into their mouths and Molly actually licked the end of the syringe afterwards so can't taste too bad!
It can also be used on adult dogs and cats/kittens too. It prob costs a bit more than pet shop tablets, but the amount of pills we had to throw away last time we wormed the cat as he kept spitting them out we prob wasted a fortune anyway!

How did the free puppy examination tie in with the innoculations?

Hi
Thanks to everyone who replyed to my question. I took my puppy to the vet today and gave her a clean bill of health and a supply of Panacur, which she took gladly. This has to be taken for 3 days then again in 3 weeks. This only cost me £2.53 for 25ml, and that will last for a while.
The remarks about getting a puppy at 6 weeks is a sore subject I think. I was worried about getting a dog at that age but some say its too young and others say its fine as long as its on solids.
We have her booked in for her 8 week injections and again at 12 weeks, we just can't wait to take her for walks!
