Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Best lead/collar for Bullmastiff?
- By jancx [eu] Date 13.10.03 13:28 UTC
Hi,
I'm new to the board having not posted before but have really enjoyed reading all the comments.
I have a 5mth Bullmastiff dog, which I am hoping to show (1st show Northern Bullmastiff in November - I'm terrified already, is anyone on the board going?) Does anyone have an opinion on the best type of collar and lead to use for showing Bullmastiffs?. Also, is it better to have a long or shorter length lead?
Thanks
Jan

Hi,
I have bullmastifs and show, not doing the Northern this time.
I show my bitches on a "Ring five" choke chain (these are quite pretty!! but strong) with a medium lenght leather lead, and i show my males on a larger brass choke chain and leather lead.
It really is personal choice, some people use the half choke and leather collars.
What have you been using for training?
Will be at the Association show in Dec and LKA.
Karen.

Hi, i use both depends on the dog, if it is a young pup then a half check is best the full check is if you have adult male that needs abit more control.

Hi,
Many thanks for your responses. Another couple of questions:

I use a half check collar for normal day to day walks, is it better to use a different type of collar for showing so the dog can differentiate.

There is a local Open show the day before the Northern Champ Show, would it be too tiring for a 6mth (just) pup to do two shows in two days. Or would it be good to go and get the experience at the Open for the Champ show next day.

Thanks again
Jan

You dont need afull check on a pup, and if you make sure pup rests then the shows should be okay best of luck.

Hi,
I use the half check collars and sturdy leads for everyday use and have the seperate show leads/collars, they do know the difference especially when i'm getting the bag ready for the shows!!!
But you could still use the everyday collar if thats what you want to do and the dog is happy, which is the main thing.
I will be at the two show you have mentioned, so maybe we will meet up.
Karen.

Thanks very much for all your help. I'm sure I'll need lots of luck as my pup has his own ideas about what he's supposed to be doing in the ring - usually lying flat out and falling asleep or going hell for leather in the opposite direction to me. Hopefully we'll be a bit more together for the first show as I've now found a really good ringcraft trainer.
I'll look forward to seeing you at the Association and LKA in December Corso Girl, how many dogs have you and what classes do they enter?

Thanks

Hi i have been away from the Bullmastiff rings for a few months as my boy that i was showing had to be put to sleep and at the moment i cant /dont feel like showing any of my Bullmastiffs lt upsets me to much, so i am showing my Bulldogs just now but will be breeding a Bullmastiff next year so i will be back in the ring with a new pup I hope.

Oh Corso Girl I'm so sorry to hear that. You must be absolutely devastated, I can't imagine how I'd cope if anything happened to my two bullmastiffs.
I hope all goes well with the breeding and you're back in the ring next year with a lovely new pup.

Best Regards
Jan
