Is there anyone out there who hates fireworks more than me and my little Buddy?
I wish i could get my hands on the idiot who invented those 'atomic bomb' thingys. You know the ones that light up the sky seconds before you hear the blast. Buddy is petrified of them (i'm not to keen either). They're going off every night. If one goes off when were out Buddy does a quick u-turn and pulls all the way home with his tail tucked in. It's so annoying especially when it scares him too much that he forgets to poo. I'm trying to get him to do it in our back garden but he's always avoided messing so close to home.
Sadly there's weeks to go yet before the big Nov 5th. I've booked it off work so he's not on his own. Anyone eles take similar action?

Hi yes i feel the same way i could go and stick them up there a*** i start my lot on to there herbs a week before the 5th and give them a bigger dose on the night lock the doors of there kennels until it is over with,- then about midnight i go and make sure they are okay the house dogs seem more upset because they can see the flash's but radio is put on plump up beds and they soon settle. but i dont i jump at all the bombs and that is what they sound like i hate them, i think it should be only one night of the year and no more, not for birthdays/weddings nothing. there thats me done.

Stupid question you may think but...
What herbs do you use to calm your dogs? I've always bought sedatives from the vet but would prefer a herbal alternative.
I used Rescue Remedy by Bachs last year and it did help a bit, but not as much as I'd hoped. This year I bought a DAP diffuser from the vets. Plugged it in in May and have refilled it every month and will do so until the end of November (we have fireworks nearby all summer). This has made a HUGE difference in Chelsea. She still doesn't like them, but doesn't shake and try to dig her way through walls like she used to. She will either sit in the chair closest to the diffuser or come and cuddle with me. I've bought some Valerian as well just to take the final edge off during November.
If you want a bit more detail on how the DAP's worked for us let me know and I'll find the link to a thread on another board where we've discussed them

Cheers!
I think i'll stick to the doggie valium! One quick jam sandwich and they're out for the count!!!
I get to have a drink then without the dogs stealing it!!!

Try Gelsemium. It's homeopathic and works great. We had our first lot of fireworks go off on Friday night (b****y kids!!) and one of my poor girls came running through shaking!!. Have now put her on Gelsemium in readiness for the next lot.

Ban Fireworks, they are a menace to society. They have started up in my area already and my springer insists on barking at every banger that goes off. Last year somebody let off some bangers outside our obedience hall, Willow was so spooked and it took me months before she would relax in the hall, she had been doing perfectly and was doing her advanced down stays out of sight etc. After the firework it took us about 3 months before she would do a full down stay. I recommend rescue remedy, one of the Bach flower remedies, it really helped Willow, she got some a few hours before class. I am starting both of mine on rescue remedy this year before obedience classes as a precaution.

Ooooh I feel better now (until it goes dark and they start off again)
Our pup hates the screechy ones too they scare him so much that he vomits, he has no problem with the bangs as we live near a lifeboat station that sets off maroons(very loud bangs) to call the lifeboat crew out so he's had to get used to them.
i hate fireworks i had someone throw them at me last year a car took the hit though luckily nothing happened and fortunely i never had the dogs with me as i would hate for them to be scared of fireworks, tess is fine she goes out when there going off no probs doesnt bat an eyelid, but as we have a big field at the back of our house which is a magnet for fireworks to be let off as a pup i insisted on her going out and as i was with her she has no problems, toby our cavalier is going deaf so they dont bother him, and we are yet to experience fireworks with jack, as our local morrisons is starting their selling of fireworks thursday, im sure we will soon find out how he reacts, although he has no problem with thunder storms and hopefully he will pick up that tess isnt bothered

Would you believe when I went to a fireworks display last Nov 5th, there was a woman there who'd brought her dog along! Reckoned he didn't like staying home on his own!
Hilda
I guess if he wasn't bothered by it....? Some dogs don't bat an eyelid at fireworks while others are terrified. If he was frightened - well - that is different... but surely someone wouldn't do that - would they???
Our two girls are not frightened by fireworks - one gets pretty cross at the big bangs - and barks - but it is indignation more than anything. The youngest is very nervy normally but is not at all bothered by noise. But our old lad was terrified - he was a wreck with any fireworks and I used to have to just sit and hold him - we tried all sorts of calming potions but they didn't help - and he couldn't be sedated for the whole month that fireworks were going off. He was the same with thunder. Then he went deaf and generally slept through - a real blessing in disguise :) We lost him in August so this year's bonfire night will be the first without him :( Janet
