I am looking for a miniature yorkshire terrier to buy in the Kent area.

No such breed as a miniature Yorkshire Terrier I'm afraid (at least , not one recognised by the KC :) ) but you can look for Yorkie breeders here : Champdogs breeders index

Make sure any breeders have carried out the necessary health checks on both parents

Is it not the Australian terrier that looks very similar but is much smaller?
I've known a few people get mixed up and call the Aus a mini yorkie. I did it myself lol!
Maby thats what the poster is on about?
(maby not, my head is a strange place and it makes sense in there!)

We get quite a few people on here asking about mini Yorkies , a friend of mine has a small Yorkie and was told quite categorically by her Vet that she HAD a mini Yorkie ;)

I know the yorkie does vary in size and that the smaller ones are quite often bred with each other to repoduce smaller pups but i thought the Aus was a deal smaller still. Must be wrong, i usually am lol. Small dogs aren't my speciality. My husband demands 'real dogs' so my dream of having a Bichon was shattered lol and in leapt the Akita. Wouldn't change it tho.
(i'm rambling aren't i?)

An Australian Terrier should weigh around 14 lbs as opposed to a Yorkies 7lb.

I thought they were a considerably smaller breed. Thanks for clearing that one up for me!

Had to look it up myself to be sure, but I remember a Yorkie breeder telling me that unscrupulous breeders will do Aus X Yorky breeding because the Aussie are bigger & therefore less likely to have problems whelping & have bigger litters. I think 'proper' Yorkie breeders will use smaller dogs & bigger bitches for breeding, so the bitch has less chance of the problems of big dog/small bitch. Not my breed (nor ever will be!), but I think this is where the 'min' Yorkie myth comes from
