I was wondering which breeds would you guys recommend for someone who lives in the city and in a country that's humid and hot all year round. Singapore to be specific... A friend of mine is thinking of getting a dog. He lives in a Huge Flat/apartment (no garden but would be able to dog for walk in nearby park) and would like a medium to large dog.

He was thinking either a huskie or Malamute but is worried about the heat. Would it be too cruel for the dog to live in such heat and the lack of garden? (of coz shelter is provided and the dog would not be going out in the day besides maybe to pee.) Are there medium to large breeds dogs known to adapt well to the above circustances?

I wouldn't recommend either a Malamute OR a husky in a flat . The weather is neither here nor there as there are plenty of Mals in AUstralia so they can obviously acclimatise fairly well .

There are plenty of other breeds far more suited to living in a flat , maybe your friend could ask around neighbours to see what type of breeds they have?

A friend of mine lives in a large city centre flat. She bought herself a longcoat chiahuha (spelling wrong i know!) and litter trained her as you would a cat. The dog does get a number little walks a day but in between times she can use the litter tray rather then be let out into the garden (as one does not exist!). This compact breed fits into her lifestyle and home perfectly. She shows her occasionally too.
Malamuts and huskys need an awful lot of excercise and outdoor space. Friends of ours have a pack of huskys and they take them sled pulling as their form of excercise and to get them trained up. They are raced all over the world.
Their house and garden is huge as they take up an awful amount of space. Malamuts are slightly larger than the husky i think and require the same type of vigorouse excercise.

What about the hairless breeds. They come in all sizes and I think they are pretty neat, hubby thinks they are ugly but aaaaaaw they are soooooooo cute. :)

What about an afghan hound or something similar? greyhound, pharoah hound. They only need a 20 minute gallop a day I believe and the pharoah & afghan originally came from hot countries.
