Hi, he would need to have his heart tested before you even consider breeding him as sadly Cavaliers do have heart problems in the breed and many are not long lived. You need to be as sure as possible that he wont pass on any hereditary problems to his puppies, or you may be held partly liable. If you are planning on having visiting bitches - belonging to others - you will need to know exactly when the bitch is ready for mating - as trying to mate them, when the bitch is not ready could be very dangerous to your dog - its not just a question of putting 2 dogs together and leaving them to it. You will also need someone experienced to hold the bitch as many pet owners are incapable of doing this. Having a stud dog is a fairly thankless task, you and the dog and your helper HAVE to be available on the right days, as bitches will require 2 matings. You will not be able to charge very much unless the dog has been successful in the show ring, and you should insist any visiting bitches are also heart tested with a NAD (no abnormality detected) result. You will also need to know how to read a pedigree, and know the dogs in the pedigree, as you dont want to mate your dog with a close relation. Even if the same names are not repeated in the 2 pedigrees - dogs could be half or full siblings without you knowing it - and it DOES matter. Why does everyone who buys a pedigree dog think that the world will want to use it at stud? Could it be for the money? If it is beleive me - you wont make any! Why not just enjoy your pet.

As Mari says, this would be a good place to start.
