my hubbies mate has just bought a staffie pup, he asked me where to get its jabs done and i told him about an offer on at my vets were if you have the jabs or yearly booster they micro chip the dog for free.
His answer to that was:-
"ok i get it microchipped and a few yrs down the line it gets out and causes a road accident, what happens to me then?, i rest my case"
i couldn't answer him cos i didn't know what to say  he said he's going to put a tag on the collar instead, same difference really to me if its wearing it at the time......some pple just bore me!

But any sensible owner would do their upmost anyway to ensure the pup doesnt get out and cause a traffic accident surely ??
I got Gus chipped because I was petrified of losing him :(

I have had all mine chipped, but I brought a Tibetan Mastiff in from France about 10 years ago and she was tattooed in her ear,I know I will get the cry that it is barbaric or some such thing, but It gave me more confidence of getting her back if anything should happen as it is more evident,I believe that a lot of rescue kennel's do not check for micro chips. It is just a fear that I have.

There is a National Dog Tattoo Registry with Tattooists all over the country, and they come to the breede to do litters of pups (in the ear). All mine are done before they go to new homes. I also have mine chipped, and encourage new owners to do this in addition. that gives them two permanent ID's.
If a dog goes into a resue, at some point it should have a vet inspection, which includes checking ears, so there is no excuse to miss an ear Tattoo.

My neighbours have just got a new dog, they got her from the local pound who were about to put her to sleep.
When they took her to the vets, it turned out she was chipped, the pound never checked.
They got back to the pound who said 'she's legally yours now, do what you want to do with her' so they just kept her. :(
I feel REALLY bad for her original owner, because she looks in really condition and was obviously loved by someone.
Seems like getting mine done was a complete waste of money, and an unneccesary ordeal for them,

well most dogs with a chip also have a name tag. My lot do and have a national pet register tag there aswell. Its quit easy for a dog to lose its collar should it run off, any responsible owner would have a permanent id there just in case. As for tatooing, its no different to us getting it done and my tiny one didn't hurt a bit!

After I read this post I was thinking, one of my cats was a stray, and although we knew she was really a stray, when we took her to the vet(she was pregnant) he just took our word for it and never checked if she was microchipped. I agree the tattoo would be better and not hurt a lot at all and is a one off, but my dogs have neither chip nor tattoo(thinking about it now) and only one of my cats is microchiped.
