I have a 7 month old Patterdale, her parents weren't actively working dogs although obviously she still has the instincts. All the big problems that are associated with patterdales I have no trouble with. She is great with other dogs fine with kids - a bit excited if anything and behaves great at home. It's the wee things that I can't get out of her. The peeing when we aren't looking ie in the kitchen or behind the sofa. We are going to obedience class and once that finished we will move on to agility training. Unfortunately where I live these classes aren't easily accessable and we have only been able to join one recently. I hope I am not too late to slove this problem? The vet said it was defiance and will grow out of it can you advise ne better on this? We have tried the drops, rubbing her nose in it and gradually moving her pee tray to the door but it still happens a few times a week.

I had a similar problem with house training my Patterdale/BT cross as well. I solved it by putting a dog flap in. That worked so well that I can now take her to stay at my parents without a single worried thought that she may pee on any of my Mum's cream carpets AND she now asks to go out when she needs to go (the dog that is not my Mum).

When she needs to go she has a wee whine at the door and we head out. It is when she has been given into trouble and put in her bed she will have a fly one on the way threw or in the kitchen floor. She has so much character and a wee noise maker when she is playing that it's a shame I can't get on top of this. I want to have that secure knowledge that you have that when you go to someone elses house there will be no surprise puddles anywhere

Have you tried any distraction techniques e.g throwing something noisy on the floor or spraying her with a water pistol when you catch her having a sly one. Haven't had this problem myself so hopefully someone with better behavioural knowledge will be along soon

Thank you. Can I just ask how old was your pup before you could relax in knowing she will behave?

Well mine was 10 months old when I first got her (she's a rescue) and she'd been raised in an outdoor kennel. She managed to be almost house trained in 2 months, it was that 1 pee at night she couldn't quite hold in. But one the dog flap was in, she was widdle free in a week and it was a few months after that that I realised that she was able to last the night. I think it was a combination of age and greater confidence in herself that solved it. So stick with it, I'm sure your dog will get there in the end.
