Hi folks, my 10 week old lab pup has been to the vets today because he has been having the runs with a little blood not all the time prob 3 time in 3 days for the last 2 weeks. He's eating pedigree dry complete, has no treats no left overs just his own food. Vet has given 2 injections an antibiotic and an anti inflamatory, told me to starve for 24 hours then start his course of tablets.
He eats well drinks plenty runs riot round the house and other than this prob is in perfect health.
My question is is this common in puppies and does it mean he will always have problems with his stomach. Does it mean he'll always have a sensitive tummy?

I'm realy worried and am hoping this is quite normal.

any comments realy appreciated. lisaxxx

Puppies often have dickie tummies so I wouldn't worry too much. Try a bland diet of rice and chicken for a few days and I am sure it will settle down. Is the food the same as the breeder was feeding ?

Hi LJS, yes i am feeding him the same as the breeder did. He did have a really bad second night and cried alot because he sleeps in the kitchen, i got up to alot of poo and blood. the breeder said this can be normal when a pup goes to his new home and is sometimes down to stress and being a bit frightened. I think this can bring it on i'm not sure.
He has no tit bits at all...

Please don't worry I am sure your little one will be fine.

I think you have ' Puppy worry syndrome' :)

If at any time you are still worried go back to your vets.

He will be fine :)

Hi,
I can only go on experience with my first dog a golden/collie cross he suffered from the runs with a little blood from time to time when he was a pup and we tried various food, both tinned and dried, but finally put him on lamb and rice kibble dried food by James Wellbeloved, specially for sensative digestions. He thrived on this, no more runs!! Although we had to watch that no one slipped him too many treats from the table, he could have doggie treats and carrots and fruit in moderation with no ill effects. For the rest of his life he would always have a delicate stomach but we managed it without the use of medication by starving him for 24hrs if he did get a bout colitus and sticking to his dried dog food only for a day or two he was soon back to normal.

Please dont worry, I am sure finding the right food for him will help to settle his tum.

HI

My lab suffers occasionally with colitis, out vet recommended we try to manage it without medication by adding bran and fresh vegetables to her diet and, luckily it works a treat for us.

Becksmommy,

The key is the colour of the blood. If is bright pillar box red, not too copious and with a little mucus then it is colitis, an infection of the lower bowel and none too serious. Your vet will probably give an anti-inflametory injection and antibiotics. Dark red (dried) blood is bad news. Loads of puppies have colitis and it is usually an intolerance of some foodstuff, - dairy products, dog food, etc... you just need to find out what. That's easy for me to say... but don't panic it is not serious.
