I don't know what to do now.Ive been reading back posts on spaying.
I have a bitch she is a health girl who will be two tomorrow. She is having her 4th season at the moment.I was thinking of having her spayed.
How long does it take for the bitch to recover after spaying? When is the best time to have it done?
I have an entire male also.
I would appreciate anyones help on this one.
Thanks Chow.

In normal circumstances they recover quickly, if your bitch is a chow you will have to be careful she does not get chronic skin infections, as it is likely that the coat will become very difficult to groom and the skin will become prone to remain damp, then you can get a yeast infection which itches and smells. If she is a Chow and is affected then clipping out is probably the best way to deal with it. There are other side effects but they are rare in a bitch that is mature at the time of spaying, coat change in dogs with long coats is very common to the extent that you should expect it.
Have you considered having a vasectomy for the dog, this will not stop him mating her but will stop puppies.

Jackie,
Yes she is a chow.
Not sure about a vasectomy.I did mention to his breeder about having him neutered and she was very much against it.
I think I will have a talk to my vet.Get his advice.
Thanks for your help.

If you are still in contact with the breeder I would ask her about changes in coat following spaying.
Coat change does not happen with all breeds. I have owned spayed German Shepherds, a Yorkie and Cairns - none of them had a coat change following spaying. In fact, in the dog show circuits there was a rumor at one time that the top winning GSD bitch in the American show circuit was spayed because she had such a fabulous coat that never seemed to "blow" (shed and get thin).
Recovery time until she is feeling completely normal even in a 4 year old should not be any longer than a week, stitches come out after 10 days.

Stacey

What has made me think about having her spayed.
We tried to mate her this week .I know it is nature but it is not for us.
I would have liked them to have pups.
I would have liked to keep a pup out of the litter.
Im not an iresponsible person.I think they both have a lot to offer to the breed.
I had a breeder round for the mating. My bitch got a bit stressed out at being held.I didn't like any of it.
The breeder said if everyone was like us no pups would be born.
I just think it was not meant to be.

Think others would tell you that the behaviour you describe is not unusual for a maiden bitch, daft thing is that once they have been mated they are usually keen to repeat the exercise. Could also be she was not ready to accept the dog.
