We are soon to get a deaf lurcher puppy from Battersea @ windsor (oops sorry have I already mentioned that on a previous post :D ) We have been through the interview and have been told we can have her pending a home check the home check person is coming round this afternoon and im going to be home alone

Does anyone know exactly what the home checkers are looking for ?? Obviously whether we have dog proof fencing but anything else ?? I just want to be prepared :)

Some members on the board are volunteer home checkers who will answer your questions.
Some home checkers bring along there own dogs to see how you react (i think). Just remember its also for your benefit so you can ask questions aswell.

Hiya Claire,
Sorry can't help you out with any home checkers advice, I just wanted to wish you luck for this afternoon :)
Sharon
I'm a volunteer home checker for two Flatcoated Retriever Rescues, fortunately my services have not been required, as yet.
Emma is correct about bringing their own dog, to judge your reaction. A dog proof garden is essential, and if the house is immaculate, do they really want a hairy smelly dog with muddy paws etc. They will want to know how long the dog will be left for, your previous dogs etc etc.
Hopefully someone who HAS done a home check will be along with some more information for you.
Good Luck :)

Hi, thanks for you messages, the home checker has just left and she was lovely - not scary at all

We had a great chat about everything doggy - some of it not even concerning the pup :) The only checking really was the garden fence and where we were going to keep the pup at night. We get to pick the pup up on Saturday - yipee !! :D :D
Liberty - which Flatcoat rescues do you volunteer for ? I used to look after a couple of rescue flatcoats (im in Basingstoke but I think one of the dogs came from Devon way) I loved those dogs to bits they were great (they were also what started me pet sitting and dog walking

Hi Claire
I'm really pleased your home check went so well :) Enjoy your new addition!
I volunteered with two FCR Rescues, one run by a chap called Brian Jones, the other is the Independent Flatcoated Retriever Rehoming, organised by Mary Haines. The latter sent me lots of information, and I've spoken to her on the phone several times; however although Brian Jones took my details, and was grateful for my offer, I didn't hear anything more from him

As I said, my services have not been required as yet, which is good news for the breed.
Who did you foster your rescues for?

Congratulations on passing the home check.
You will love your lurcher puppy. They are the most amazing dogs in the world. I have 5 rescue lurchers - all different. Would love to hear how you get on with yours and if I can help let me know
Regards laurie
All the best with your new lurcher I look forward to hearing of her progress.:)

Congrats Claire :D
I homecheck but read your post too late !!
Le

I didnt actually foster the flatcoats, im a dog walker/pet sitter, they were rescue dogs but I just walked them every week day for a few years because their owners worked. When I worked in a petshop I used to take one of them to work with me some days for a change of scene - she used to end up eating half the stock :D :D
Im really excited about the lurcher pup, her name is April at the moment but I think we are going to call her Lily. Ive ordered a book on training deaf dogs and a couple of books on rescue dogs ive just got to get her a vibrating collar now - they are £105

lucky she is actually going to be my parents dog so they can pay for that ;)
Im really looking forward to start training her, I think it will be really rewarding, thing is I will have to train my parents too - I think that will be more difficult than training a deaf dog lol
No doubt I will be posting again real soon for more advice !!

Hi, when we adopted Lola,we had a home check (she came from Millbrook ,(RSPCA) in Chobham, they were wonderful , and we have just had our follow up visit a couple of weeks ago ,the ladies name was Sue ,she is also a volunteer,we got along so well (she was here for almost two hours ) she was able to answer so many queries, in fact i am thinking of becoming a volunteer myself, and guess who slept through almost all of the visit?....Lola ! i just think its great that they follow everything through so thoroughly,it can only be good for the dogs!!
