Topic Dog Boards / General / Alternatives to quarantine? Help please?

I know, I know, the tired old issue of quarantine!!! I refuse to do it - sounds silly but when I look back at past messages and hear people complain about putting their "children" into kennels for four weeks (too long, kennel stress, etc, etc.) I know I'm not alone. A while back I remember reading something about people in France etc. that look after your animal in their homes for the quarantine period (for a fee - of course) whilst the tests are carried out. Then after you get the okay and everything checks out with passport, papers etc. they come through and only have to spend a minimal amount of time in quarantine. What I'm trying to find out is if anyone knows of a reliable family/foster home anywhere in the EU that does this sort of thing? Cant bear living without my children much longer - please help?

What country are the dogs living in now? Whether or not they are subject to quarrantine depends on their country of origin.

When I moved from the US to the UK I brought one of my dogs with me, I just could not stand to leave her and there was no Pet Passport scheme at the time. Believe me, I suffered a lot more than my dog. She adjusted to life in the kennel. She would pay attention to me for fifteen or twenty minutes when I visited, doing tricks for treats, but then she went back to her regular duties. Barking when the rest of the inmates barked, etc.

The day I brought her home was wonderful. I worried she would have broken housetraining after six months of kennel life, but she was a gem. She inspected the house, jumped on the sofa for a snooze and was back to life as if it had never been interrupted by quarrantine.

Hi Stacey, thanks for your message. They are currently living in Zimbabwe and I know that there is no escape from quarantine for them!! However I would much rather place them with a nice foster family in a "qualifying country" than in a kennel for six months. One of the dogs is quite independant but the other is a real mush and think he would be distraught in a kennel. It is reassuring to hear that your dog didn't seem too upset by the whole episode. Thanks again for your message and best of luck in UK. - Lisa.

Hi Lara,
Thank you so much for that link. I am currently corresponding with them and fingers crossed will be seeing my babies again in about 7 months!!

Hi Lisa,

If the dogs can stopover in a nicer place than kennels it would, of course, be better.

The dog I had to quarantine was also a mush, btw, which is why I could not leave her behind. If worse comes to worse the two dogs may be able to stay in the same kennel run.

Hi Stacey,
Thanks for your words of comfort regarding the kennels. Did your dog really seem very settled and happy in the kennels? I must say that I went to visit a very nice kennel last weekend and if this pet fostering thing doesn't materialize think it's the one my kids will be staying at. Have visited so many now and found only one that doesn't look like a mini prison cell!! Would you mind telling me which kennel your dog 'did its time' at?
Many thanks again,
Lisa.

Hi Lisa

Just thought I would let you know that I had my 2 dogs in Quarantine at Bayton Lodge, Warks they are really good there and my 2 didn't suffer at all, You can visit everyday except Sundays and they bathed mine every month aswell without charge.

Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

Lisa.....i have put 8 dogs through quarantine so far & never had a problem with the dogs not settling. However, they weren't my pets before coming over, so i think that made it easier for them. I have another male coming over on the passport scheme after Xmas, it has worked out perfect so far as he has stayed with his breeder & lived with her family & other dogs etc....

Just want to say a big "thank you" to everyone who responded. It was such a relief to hear some good news about quarantine for a change and most of the kennel information you all sent me sounds great. Been researching them over the internet and they all seem well worth a visit :o) - 'road trip'!! So a big thank you to Stacey, Michelle, Skyota, Borders and Lara.

Naturally any other good quarantine kennel information will be appreciated and words of wisdom and advice. For now I have my next few weekends full of trips to kennels (my ever suffering partner (taxi) will be delighted to hear).

Thanks again!!!
Lisa.

I have brought a 13wk old shiba puppy from Japan. he has just come out of quarantine last thursday & went to his first show the sunday & qualified for crufts. He had no problem what so ever & it is right it's us that lay at night worrying whilst they have not a care in the world !!
P/s my puppy came into the Bawtry quarantine kennels (gallyhill) & steve / Sandra the owners could not be faulted.

Sorry - have I misunderstood something? A puppy cannot qualify for Crufts under 6 months of age? Or am I wrong here regarding imports?

I read the post as the pup was 13 weeks when he arrived - therefore 6 months + 13 weeks when released from quarantine and so able to qualify! You are right - a puppy under 6 months cannot be shown in the UK and therefore cannot qualify for Crufts. Janet
