Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Adding Tripe

I have read many posts where adding tripe is mentioned to put weight on a dog, does this always work with dogs, One of mine is very boney so I thought about trying it but I dont want to over do it because its so hard to get weight off once its on.

Tripe will give bulk, just reduce the amout when he get to the weight that you require him to be

I am a bit confused with this because my dog is the weight he should be, 18kgs and he is 1 year old, but he is skin and bone. I dont want to increase his weight I want to put some meat on him but how am I going to do this without putting his weight up, or should I not worry about the scales. I cant work out how he can weigh sp much when he looks so boney,

What breed Sandie?
- By Sandie [gb] Date 08.10.03 14:22 UTC
He is a springer and always running around its hard to keep him still, I worry that he is so skinny but also I dont want him to get to fat he is a very small springer probably smaller that average.

Get him on the tripe and a terrier meal ;-) It will do him the world of good and I very much doubt he will get fat. If you think that he is bodying up to much, adjust the quantity for a few days. It is a very easy way to put body weight on and you can adjust it up and down to suit his needs. Don't forget you will need to worm him regularly too.

How should I do this, he is on Autarky so should I just add some to this, how much do you suggest.
Does it have to be just tripe or can it be a tripe mix.

I am interested to hear you say that your dog is on Autarky. It appears, looking at posts, you are not the only one who's dog does not do well on it. If you need to use up the Autarky first then I would. Then buy some 'terrier meal' and frozen tripe and off you go. You do not need to change the diet over slowly, as the tripe should not upset your dogs system. You could feed a tripe mix, but personally I would start off with straight tripe as some other ingredients may upset your dogs tummy?

Sorry to sound dim but what is terrier meal, although this dog does not do well on Autarky my other 4 are looking really good, It does make it easier if they are all fed the same but I also need to watch them indiviually.
Where do I buy frozen tripe from, can you also advise on amounts to feed, I am so used to just opening a bag.
Thanks.

The best type of tripe for dogs is "green" tripe which is completely unprocessed, unbleached, un-messed-about-with. It has 2 problems: 1) You usually have to buy a minimum of 500lbs 2) it does tend to induce vomiting - in humans!!! My dogs have been fed on tripe & an ordinary mixer for 20+ yrs & I completely recommend it ( if you've got a strong stomach.) It certainly helps body up youngsters & yet the oldies don't seem to get fat. Best of all -it's cheap.
Some of the pet supermarkets sell "free flow tripe" frozen in bags which is minced & the next best thing. You can also buy Butcher's Tripe (think that's the trade name) in tins, but not sure if that contains anything else.
HTH (probably put you off for life.)

Hi
I'll back sandie up with our dimness,
what is terrier meal? i've never heard of it(i don't get out much)
I'm just intrested,my 2 boxers could do with a bit of meat on them(just late maturers i think)
Is it a complete dry meal? Does it smell? and whats in it?

Terrier meal is simply plain broken biscuit - similar to Winalot (or how Winalot used to be!), which is added to meat (or other protein) to make a balanced diet.

Thank you JG :-) Yes it is a plain, no-frills mixer biscuit. It is rough textured and not kibble shaped, so aids teeth cleaning. It also tends to be less expensive than the proprietory mixer brands and has less 'gunk' added.

I have been looking for tinned tripe but can only find tripe mix, is this ok or is there such a thing as just tripe.

Is it okay to feed Butcher's Tripe with a dried complete, or should it be with just a mixer?
