Hopefully there will be a few out there who would like to say hello. Tell us about yourselves and your dogs :) Don't be shy.

Of course, if there are none this is going to fall flat on its backside - so perhaps the regulars should sign in with who they are and what dogs they have too :) just so I don't have a post with no replies

Edit: I have 2 danes (as most of you know), a 14 month old blue dog called Willis, and a brindle bitch called Phoebe. I have a significant other, 2 kids, 3 horses, 2 guinea pigs and a rabbit :)

HI lucy, How's your baby?

(Gawd, I hope it WAS you that had a baby!! lol)

I live about 4 miles away from Stroud going towards Cirencester. It's VERY hilly here. You can stand on one hill and look across to another and as the crow flies it could take 1 minute, but to walk it, about 1 hour! Stroud is at the heart of 5 valleys and I live on a hill, which means I have go UP a hill at the end of a walk  It is very pretty though.

~ Sharon :)
- By LJS Date 09.10.03 10:39 UTC
She is fine thanks !!

We are not too far away then ! Just the Oxfordshire side of Stow on the Wold !

We go to Cirencester quite a bit as my husband has his car serviced at the Vauxhall dealership there quite often as he does a lot of miles ! We also come back via there when we go to Swindon !

I think we are very lucky to live out this way ! :)

Hi everyone,
My name is Sheila, I live in sunny Cumbria near Carlsile, I am happily (very) divorced and have three grown up children (2 boys/1 girl all still living at home) who are not showing any signs of leaving..argggggg.
I work with adults who have severe challenging behaviour, this entails shift work hence the odd times I post on these boards.
I have 2 dogs at the present time- an ageing Black Lab called Max and a Doberman whose 17 months called Zac ( whose a very verbal at times, basically just gobby) its through the latter that I have discovered the wonderful addictive world of dog shows. I am hoping to have an addition to my chaotic household in early December in the form of a Dobie bitch puppy, God Willing, the pregnant bitch does'nt produce a litter of all males! P.S ususally spend my spare time trying to avoid the kids..:D
- By annieee [gb] Date 09.10.03 17:48 UTC
Hi

I have two dogs, Lola (5 month Dobe), George (7yr old Dalmation x Bassett), two cats Pedro and Jose (pronounced Hosai - as in the Mexican). Two children 23 and 21 who don't look like moving out in the near future. Two snakes Ralph and Rodney and husband MK2.

Sheila - I know how you feel with your Dobe search. I drove the Champ doggers mad with my constant worrying trying to find a Dobe. I wanted to show Lola but family illness has hampered her training. She is a lovely brown girl, very well behaved .........well, quite well behaved .......well she can be well behaved when she wants to be .... she is a Dobe after all :D :D You are in good company. Jo19 and Jaffa are Dobe owners who live in your area. I'm in Bedfordshire. There are quite a few Dobe owners on champdogs. They are being a bit quiet at the moment :)
- By she [gb] Date 09.10.03 21:44 UTC
Hi annieee,
Even though I love my old Lab dearly I am now definately a Dobe addict, I am though a bit apprehensive about how I will cope with a bitch in a house with two entire dogs, I have friends that have a couple of Dobes, one of each sex and they experience very little problems (so that is encouraging or am I being just terribly niave). Even though your young lady is only five months do you have any tips on this subject? as I see that you also have a male. Basically looking for a bit of reassurance I suppose.
She :)
- By annieee [gb] Date 10.10.03 17:16 UTC
Hi

Although I have another boy, he was given the 'chop' when he was a puppy. Also, my previous Dobe, Sophie, was spayed when she was about 18 months. She subsequrently had a urinary leak which has been linked to spaying. The person you need to chat to is Christine from Kerioke as she is a Dobe breeder and our resident expert. I'm sure she'll be able to advise you. Start a new post and she's bound to see it. Give it a Dobe title or say 'for kerioke'

:) Anne :)

I confess I lurk but I am a 'people watcher' which probably led me to becoming a psychiatric nurse. The interactions on this site are fascinating!!! I think I have posted about 50 times since I joined this year so I do come out of the shadows occasionally ;)
I am married to Peter (third time lucky) and we own a beautiful Gordon Setter called Bess who is 9 months old. I also have three cats.
We have 7 children between us all grown and busy producing the next generation. We live in glorious Cumbria.
Is that enough? :)

Hi, im Claire, ive been lurking for a few months now and posted a couple of times. Im currently Dogless, although im a dog walker and pet sitter (as well as working in pensions  ) so some days it feels like I have the little darlings coming out of my ears :D I grew up in the show world with Afghans and my best friend whilst I was growing up was a Bichon. Although im 25 im yet to have flown the nest, although I got the keys to my new place in July - still renovating, honest :D !! Hi Sandy

V interested to hear you've got a Gordon - I'm a Dobeaholic but fell in love with Gordons when I saw them for the first time at Darlington show this year. My husband plans to get a pup next year when our dobe pup Cam is a grown up, and a Gordon is on the shortlist! Any tips on Gordon owning?

Thanks

Jo :)
- By sandy salisbury [gb] Date 10.10.03 22:24 UTC
Hi Jo
As far as I am concerned Gordons are the most wonderful, beautiful, intelligent, affectionate, energetic family dogs ever to grace this planet!! However..........Bess has taught us that she requires consistent, firm but gentle handling. Gordons are known to be quick to be sorry - you know, the big brown eyes job and a nuzzle of your hand - if caught in the act of misbehaving but will just try harder next time not to get found out :D
Gordons when fully grown have the stamina to run all day (especially when grouse are about) and anyone who owns a Gordon should be prepared to make sure they have plenty of daily exercise. Bess loves running with her doggy friends but usually wears them out!
Our Bess 'talks' to us, apparently another Gordon trait and can be a real bossy boots.
As you can see I could go on a lot longer  Do you have a breeder in mind?
Hope this helps - please let me know if you do decide on a Gordon.
Sandy
- By Brainless [gb] Date 10.10.03 22:30 UTC
There is a Gordon breeder who now has Elkhounds too. The youngest Elkie is convinced that her young Gordon friend Romilly is there for her comfort, and is frequently found using her as a sofa :D Nice dogs!!!
- By Jo19 [gb] Date 13.10.03 23:27 UTC
Thanks Sandy, only just saw your post!

I've got a dobe at the moment who's still a young'un (six months) so won't be able to get another dog until say, next April when Cam's a year old. It will depend a bit on his adolescence though ... if he goes off the rails when his hormones kick in we may have to wait a bit longer. He's my first dobe so we're just going to have to play it by ear. You may have noticed from my other posts however that I am a woman besotted and as far as I'm concerned Cam's going to be the next prime minister. :D

Although I would be very tempted to get another dobe, I'd also love to try another breed to see how the temperament, personality etc differed. Unfortunately though it's hubby's final decision as Cam is 'my' dog. Richard is very taken by the Gordon, and I must admit I did really fall for them at Darlington show. Also on the shortlist is the Malinois and the Dane (though hubby is definitely not keen on the Dane!).

I'll probably have a better idea around Christmas time whether or not we'll safely be able to welcome another pup into the family in spring/summer 2004. If we feel we can, we'll start talking to breeders and doing some serious research about the breed.

Can't wait!

I must admit I'm not too daunted by the prospect of another maniac in the house. Dobes as you probably know require huge amounts of mental stimulation to keep them happy, and Cam is very active in the house (I haven't had an undisturbed night on the sofa since he arrived in June, <sigh>) but you get used to it and find a balance ... Cam has lots of fun but he knows that sometimes he has to be quiet and amuse himself. At least until I've finished pouring myself another glass of wine. :D

Anyway, I may call upon your Gordon expertise again in the future, if you don't mind!

Best wishes

Jo :)

What a small world:D. Did you use a training class and if so which one? My two need knocked into shape. I used one up in clarkston in the past but its a bit of a hike
- By carle [gb] Date 10.10.03 12:15 UTC
I havent used a class but was in touch with someone in Giffnock which is even further away.
I am trying to find someone to take Star to as she is not very good with other dogs. She wants to play with them but ends up fighting after about a minute. She tries to boss them about.

I have spoken to a behaviourist who advised me to let her get on with it as it is normal dog behaviour and not to jump in or give her into trouble and she will eventually play when she learns how. Not many people like their dog to get into fights.

If anyone has any advice let me know please.
