Topic Dog Boards / General / How much exercise??

Hiya, I was just wondering how much exercise you all give your dogs? Obviously it depends a lot on the breed I suppose
Baillie, my goldie has a run round the garden in the morning, about 45mins off lead in the park in the afternoon and, around 6ish, he has an hour lead walk. Then again round the garden at bedtime. Obviously this varies occassionally, but this is the norm - Some people I know never walk their dogs, although I have to say the dogs look contented enough :) What do you guys do?

Willis gets more exercise than Phoebe. He doesn't need a walk every day, but he'd like one :) I tend to take both in the field every night though and they go mad running through the long grass adn chasing each other. Tis less suicidal than trying to walk two danes!!

Bronnie has a good 45min walk in the morning, mostly off the lead, then in the evening she has a minimum of 1 hour, usually more, all of which is off the lead. When I take her I go to very remote places most of the time, and more often than not I meet with a friend who has a lab a couple of months younger than Bronnie, who is her best mate. This way they get to run and play together. When my hubby takes her he is usually training her to work but that is also combined with playing.

Tonight for the first time we will be taking her out with the Harris so this should be interesting, but she will still have a good run.

I always find it interesting that when it rains, or it's dark dogs suddenly don't need walking !!!.

We take Bronnie out regardless of what the weather is doing as the rain doesn't bother her.

For 'formal' exercise, mine get an hour or so (about 4 miles) in the morning with Himself, and about half an hour with me in the afternoons. Both these walks are a mixture of lead (road) walking and free running. They also have free run of the downstairs of the house and the garden the rest of the time.

Im a real morning person up with the larks but Bradley my 6 month old boxer won't have any of it. I try at 6.30am to take him for a walk. He holds onto his bed with his teeth so i have to force him in the car and when we get to a lovely park he will not wake up he force his nose into a corner and won't budge. So I spend at least 45 mins trying to convince him that this is a great idea. To no avail. I end up walking round the park on my own and come back to bradley sleeping like a baby.
Mornings are not his thing. Bless.

LOL> "Holds onto bed with his teeth" ...sorry to butt in, but your Bradley sounds SUCH a marvellous character! I love reading about him!

My two - 1/2 size sort of GSD, and an Aussie - get 10-15 minutes about 7.30am and longer at weekends. Then they get anything from 20minutes to 45 minutes at lunchtime, depending whether I am working or not. Then from 15-30 minutes at 4.30pm and then about 15minutes at about 9.30pm. This is all off lead apart from Tara who does some of it on lead for heel work and she is never let off the lead in the dark in case she chases a fox and forgets where she lives :D

Really depends on who takes them, what the weather is and how busy we are :)

ours get 10 to 20 mins in the morning depending on what happens, and an hour in the evening as well as run of the garden during the day, although im told when im not about all they do is sleep they then wake up 10 mins before i get in doesnt matter that i never come in at the same time everyday, at weekends dogs get piled into the van (and when mum gets her car kids will be piled in to that) and we go to country parks so the dogs (we tell the kids) can have a good run around, tess and jack occasionally come to work with me where they play with other dogs, tess also does a bit of agility at work, and jack is to start sniffer training

We go out in the morning for about an hour and a half but were not moving all this time. We practice lead walking, up the roads, go see the cows, and do a stay/recall/heelwork stuff. We chat to people and dogs we meet and eat grass ( Morse). In the park we play fetch with a plastic bottle or a squashed can or even scent the chewy thing and run about with pals for a bit then home for breakfast. In the afternoon its dig the garden/playtime with toys for about 20 minutes and when SB comes home they vanish for a run for an hour. It sounds a lot but we just toddle about and look at things, stop for drinks, lie down etc. Weather no object and he loves being out in the dark. :)

Every day Lascaux [corgi] gets 20-30 mins walk at 6.30 am [for sniffing, playing ball, wees and poos] and same in the late evening.

Plus:

3 weekdays he gets midday walk of min. 1-1.5 hours.

Other 2 weekdays he doesn't get his midday walk but plays all day [eg. at pretend greyhound racing] with other nice dogs at a friend's house. This keeps him socialised and is our compromise for not having another dog.

On weekends he gets special expeditions to new places - say 1.5-2 hours. We try to go on as much grass as possible, have rests, and he stays close by so he is not doubling his mileage.

I was a bit paranoid that this was too much when I read the posts on over-exercising - but I think he is ok; if his eyes look tired then we stop.

At home he potters about but doesn't run around much - he plays with his toys instead or sleeps.

How old is Lascaux? I can imagine him lapping the others and barking like mad " Me first! One is winning!" :)

Lascaux is now 16 months- his greyhound impressions are hilarious and everyone joins in, including an ancient arthritic husky who loves him because he doesn't get the chance to play very often.
So at that house Lascaux is in charge of "games" and the husky is in charge of making sure all the dogs get their afternoon nap - including walking around each room and checking all the dogs are in their beds LOL. :D

I have 3 Akitas.
The two adults get about 20 minutes a day road work, 20 minutes field walking and then a 30 minute run around a well fenced and locked up field.
The puppy doesn't really need to be walked for another three months as it could bugger her joints at such a young age.
I'd love to give them more but i don't drive so i cant get them to the loch's and coast dotted round about.
