Hi All,
I have a 5 mth old Cocker Spaniel Pup, who is a lovely dog. The only problem
is that during the night he's still weeing & pooing on the floor. In the day he's
great, he will quite happily go outside and do his business.
The Vet as told us to try feeding him earlier, saying that this may be making him
go as he's unable to hold it in. We're going to try this method, but will this
stop the weeing too?
He gives us no indication till the morning, then it's too late.
Any advice would be great.
Many Thanks
Claire

Hi
Do you use paper?
What time are you putting him to bed?
What time are you feeding him?
What are you feeding him on?
What time do you get up to him in the morning?
This will give us a bit mroe to go on :)

Hi Chloe,
We did use paper, but the Vet told us to take it up, as it makes the pup think that it's ok to mess in the house.
We usually put him to bed about 11- then wake up about 5.30-6.00 when he starts barking. We never hear him before then.
We're feeding him Hills Science Plan food- usually his last feed is about 6- is that too late?
It's also hard to tell him off, when we're not actually there when he does his business.
Any advice would be great

Hi
How long ago did you stop using paper? Personally, I used paper at night to make it easier to clean up, and my puppy went dry overnight of his own accord. Does he always do it in the same place? He is still quite young, so some allowances need to be made :)
Is he on 3 or 4 meals a day now?
Does he do everything when you take him out at 11? How long do you put him in the garden for?
I'm not a fan of Hills, but if he's doing OK on it, I wouldn't change him - does he have any other meals in the day - scrambled egg or anything like that? Might be worth looking into giving him something lighter before he goes to bed?

Hi Chloe,
We've only recently stopped using the paper. He used to always do it
there, now he's started doing it the other side of the breakfast bar for some reason.
We were feeding him 3 times a day, but the Vet told us to try twice a day to see if that helps him.
When we put him outside at 11- it's usually for about 10 minutes- just enough time to be able to do his mess really.
I think the idea about giving him lighter food is great. I might try giving him 2 dry food meals and a 3rd human meal and see whether that helps.
We've noticed he seems to be going off the hills food a bit lately, so we're thinking of changing it. Any suggestions?
Thanks for all your advice
Claire x

Hi Claire,
'Scuse me butting in! When you say you put him out last thing, do you go out with him to make sure he performs, or do you let him out on his own?

Hi Jean,
No feel free! Me or my partner go outside with him- otherwise he tries
to eat the snails *laugh*. He usually does a couple of wees and a poo before he comes back in.
Do you think we've been feeding him too late?
Thanks

hi!
i have a 14 week old akita pup. she has been dry overnight for a week now and i put it down to having her in a crate for bed. as she is in a confined, but comfortable, space she does not feel like sleeping in her own pee and holds it till 6.30am. I also take away her water when we take her out for her last toilet trip at around 11pm. It is replaced immediately in the morning but if she is not filling up through the night if she wakes she wont be inclined to empty there either.
As for the food, i feed my puppy on Chudleys, maufactured by Dodson and Horrel. They make every kind of food imaginable, from replacement milk to sensitive adult food. I have found it to be very good and the dogs love it.
i hope i have helped.

i would give the last feed at around 5.30 pm, after you have eaten your evening meal so as to keep the dog in its place. that should give the pup plenty of time to empty the bowels before bed time.
