My neighbour most days finds her dog running out the door when its opened shes like a greyhound how quick she gets out the door. shes actully a small cairn terrier . she runs away and wont come back i think shes after a lab at the back of my house who barks alot.
problem shes got is that they have children and there always givin her treats at any time . so rewarding her with treats hasent helpted her train the dog. any ideas please:)

What if she uses a safety gate, so every time she has to open the front door the dog gets put behind the gate? I don't know any tips on training the dog i'm afraid. Our patterdale was a right little horror for doing that, he could smell a bitch for miles and would vanish for days after it if he got out.
Maybe if she went back to basics with the sit/stay command it may help, i'm sure someone will come along with better advice.
Good luck......Sarah
Its hard training dog and children at the same time. She needs to set boundaries for the kids first - mum/dad trains and gives treats while kids feed/play/groom the dog. If the doors are open as the kids run in and out, tell them its either out to play or in the house and enforce it. Maybe you can help her train the dog or point her to a class? Then she can train the family. Is the cairn getting enough play/walks etc? We had this with Morse and the back gate opening but got someone to distract him while the gate was used and now he dosent try to get out alone, especially as hes kept busy.

she gets loads of walks and kids play loads with her. shes just a little terror ,
personly i think there to soft on the dog , when i go round its going mental jumping all over the place jumping up to try to get at there plates. not with me she wont;) i think once youve got the nack with dogs they get the message , i just firmly tell her to get down or stop barking she does .but how can i train there whole family ... thats the hard bit. i know that alot of people on this site say dont tell the dog off, well they certainly dont tell her off and its running riot weeing in the house on occasions. looks like it dosent always work , and goes to show that dogs just need different ways of training:)
All dogs need consistent training, if it doesn't get it, then it will run riot and appear "naughty" - but it doesn't know any different.
If the dog is weeing in the house, could the owner start teaching her dog what is wanted? Does it have a medical condition she is not aware of? Has it ever been properly housetrained? Does she notice when it asks to go out, as she has her hands full with the children; does it wee from excitement when playing with the kids....And so on.... :)
Ideally she would go to a training class ;) if she doesn't already. I agree the kids should'n't just give the dog treats all the time, but if used properly (ie as a genuine reward for doing the right thing) they can be a great way of training.
Nothing wrong with saying "no" occasionally; I use a sharp "ah ah" once in a while, but to communicate rather than to "tell off". I don't want my dog upset, but i do want her taking notice. Again, there is nothing wrong with telling a dog to get down or to stop barking etc, but why not train a "Settle" or "Quiet" :)
If the owner hasn't a clue about training or hasn't the time, then i agree with another poster, manage the situation where her Cairn runs off, and use child gates etc. or simply put the dog in another room while the door is open :)

Think that one solution here would be to use a crate when the children are in and out the doors!
